Compassion guides my use of the Gottman Method for couples counselling and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy.
Adults finding ADHD symptoms are impairing their personal relationships and/or professional role may need new coping strategies. Compassion and curiosity guide my support of young adults (& teens 15 or older) with ADHD, whose impulsivity or poor organizational skills often burdens them with guilt and low self-esteem. If a mood disorder or anxiety is interfering with thriving in your workplace role, together we will develop self-soothing practices for your emotional regulation and occupational success. To nurture clients' bounce-back from trauma or help couples stuck in conflict, I draw upon my clinical training and lived experience.

At times, many of us contend with emotions and suffering that are overwhelmingly painful, disheartening and difficult to bear, often as a result of unique stressors and events. I work with adults, adolescents, families and step-families using Emotionally Focused Therapy, EMDR, interpersonal psychotherapy, and DBT/CBT within neuroscience and attachment frameworks. I encouraged clients to access inner strengths and free their capacity for growth. Whether you or a family member experience depression, anxiety, marital distress or difficulties with peers, you deserve support in a confidential, accepting, safe and caring environment.

If you are unhappy in your relationship, or struggle with relationship/intimacy anxiety - my approach may be a fit for you. Relationships are rewarding, but challenge us in complex ways. Attending Emotion-Focused Therapy can help to address painful emotions, identify patterns that keep you "stuck", and to gain awareness of your needs. EFT can help you to attain a deeper level of connection internally and with others. My therapeutic approach is ideal if your goal is to look at what may be holding you back in your close relationships. I work most often with partners of addicts, infidelity, and marriage/parenting conflicts.

What if there was a solution to transform your relationship? You've been stuck in never-ending cycles of arguments or complete emotional detachment from your partner. You need change but unsure what to next. No matter how hard you've tried on your own—having conversations, going on date nights, reading books, or even seeing a therapist—there's still a disconnect. You're craving emotional connection, effortless intimacy or sex, and healthy communication. You want to take control of your relationship's future as you are worried these unresolved issues will jeopardize your family, your happiness, your future and your lifelong dreams.

What if you could talk to your partner without it becoming an escalated argument every single time? You’re looking for a therapist either because you’re not getting the emotional affection you need or because you have the same fights over and over. You try to discuss your problems but always end up disconnected. You’ve already tried everything you know to do. You have attempted some conversations, gone on date nights, read some books, and may have been to a therapist before. You’re scared of what might happen if something doesn’t change soon. Things are at the point now where you know you need professional help. You need change.

As an individual, couples and family therapist with level 3 training in the Gottman method, I can help you make meaningful changes in relationships, develop healthier communication patterns, and re-write your narrative to empower future experiences.
You feel stuck. You want to live a life of meaning and purpose, thrive in healthy relationships, and achieve your full potential. But deep-rooted issues in your subconscious drive your thinking and behavior patterns. To change means to alter the way you view things. Because when you change how you look at things, the things you look at change. Systemic power imbalances, shouldering cultural pressure to achieve, and repeating the same self-sabotaging behaviors and thoughts have left you feeling lost and in need of guidance. As an experienced and highly skilled South Asian psychotherapist, I see you. I understand. And I can help.

I believe that there is good in every person, and hope in every situation. I have helped hundreds of individuals, couples, and families heal, grow, and connect. As a relational therapist, I appreciate the impact that our relationships have on our well-being. I do not see clients as having something wrong with their minds that necessarily needs to be fixed. Rather, I see my clients as unique individuals, each with their own stories and perspectives, embedded in important relationships and contexts that impact them. I see strengths and I see hope, even when it feels like there is none.

Conflicts in relationships are inevitable! It’s how we adapt & overcome them that makes the difference. These conflicts can be circumstantial or rooted in anxieties from the past and may not look like your typical conflict. Perhaps you find yourself experiencing the same anxious thoughts or maybe you're stuck in the same negative patterns that you can't seem to break as a couple. Interpersonal and internal conflict can leave us feeling stuck, confused, stressed, overwhelmed, or depressed. Most importantly, recognizing that fear is an emotion we all experience and discovering how fear operates for you is okay to explore.

Engaging in psychotherapy is a brave step towards reconciling with one's past, making amends with others, and finding peace with oneself. It's a unique relationship that lays the foundation for healing all other relationships. Psychotherapy, in its core, is a spiritual journey—a pilgrimage into the self. Just as a pilgrim walks from temple to temple, seeking enlightenment, an individual's therapeutic journey may involve multiple therapists. I might be your current one, but perhaps not your first nor your last. Each leg of this journey, with each therapist, requires courage and a faith that transformation is attainable.

Do you you wish you were more easy going and confident? Would it be nice to be able to stand up for yourself more readily, or not second-guess yourself all time. Do you sometimes feel like you do not belong or that there is something wrong with you. Stressful experiences leave a deep imprint on our minds, bodies and even relationships. The effects of these can only be reversed in the context of a trusting relationship. Using attachment science, we’ll uncover patterns affecting your life, work through difficult emotions, and come to new understandings.

Devyani is of South Asian Origin, she understands what it means to try to balance the duality of the North American lifestyle with opposing cultural norms, and the anxieties. Devyani follows various approaches based on the client’s needs. However her individual counselling is based on a client centred, narrative therapy, and DBT approach; whereas her couples work is rooted in Gottman theories.

Feeling stuck and unsure about sharing what’s in your heart? Are you being extra careful with your words to avoid arguments? Or maybe feeling distant from your partner, or hurt by something they did? I get it. Many couples go through tough times like these, feeling alone and unsure. Sometimes, to avoid arguments, people either stay quiet or might yell to be heard, which can make both partners feel upset and disconnected. As someone who grew up in a South Asian family, I understand how our families and where we come from can really shape how we think, feel, and act with our loved ones.

Gottman Method Counsellors

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analysed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomised controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
