Do you ever have intense feelings of sadness or despair? If you only had this new job, new house, new partner, or a different body, everything would be better, happier, and more joyful. Have you ever thought, “I must be crazy, something must be wrong with me because everyone else looks like they have the perfect life, and I don’t?” Do you find yourself exhausted to the point that that you cling to that next cup of coffee in the hope that it will give you enough energy to keep you going throughout the day?

An important part of healing is understanding the connection between mind and body and how it relates to experiences of anxiety, depression, and trauma. A fundamental component of recognizing your needs is to create an awareness of emotions. Our bodies signal us when there is discord, and through an experiential process, I focus on helping individuals make sense of their world. My work focuses on coping with difficult body sensations while also helping you begin to think and feel differently about your experiences, your emotions and ultimately yourself.

At times, many of us contend with emotions and suffering that are overwhelmingly painful, disheartening and difficult to bear, often as a result of unique stressors and events. I work with adults, adolescents, families and step-families using Emotionally Focused Therapy, EMDR, interpersonal psychotherapy, and DBT/CBT within neuroscience and attachment frameworks. I encouraged clients to access inner strengths and free their capacity for growth. Whether you or a family member experience depression, anxiety, marital distress or difficulties with peers, you deserve support in a confidential, accepting, safe and caring environment.

What if you could talk to your partner without it becoming an escalated argument every single time? You’re looking for a therapist either because you’re not getting the emotional affection you need or because you have the same fights over and over. You try to discuss your problems but always end up disconnected. You’ve already tried everything you know to do. You have attempted some conversations, gone on date nights, read some books, and may have been to a therapist before. You’re scared of what might happen if something doesn’t change soon. Things are at the point now where you know you need professional help. You need change.

It's difficult to imagine what life can be like beyond the hardships; difficult to see a light in the darkness. I am here to sit with you. I am here to cry with you. I am here to see you. I am here to listen to you. I am here to empower you to grow into yourself. But, I'm also here to laugh, smile, and celebrate with you. Because even though the darkness might feel insurmountable, there are always glimmers and I want to help you find them. It's a pretty scary place to be alone in your mind, but I'm here to help make that place a little less lonely.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
