My therapy approach is strongly inspired by my lived experiences as an immigrant
women
of colour who left her motherland China alone at 18 years old and found her joyful place in learning about others’ stories.
Therapy space often starts as a brave space, because of your decision to entrust your story with a stranger, in this case, me :). My responsibility as your therapist is to turn the brave space into a safe space for every part of you. I often think about the therapy as the process of putting together puzzles that don’t come with the original image. My role as your therapist is to accompany you to explore each piece with curiosity and acceptance, so that you can make sense of your pieces and construct images that feel authentic to you.

I believe the key to personal growth is self-awareness and non-judgemental acceptance. A compassionate therapist can help make sense of your experiences and challenge the patterns that no longer serve you. A greater understanding of your hopes, fears, and relationships can lead to more empowered choices and freedom from self-doubt. I would work with you to identify your concerns and harness your personal resources, setting therapy goals that meet your unique needs. By strengthening your relationship to yourself, we can positively impact how you relate to others and the world around you.

Life can be hard. The unexpected (and sometimes even the unthinkable) happens. There is no quick fix for the messiness of life but support is available. I'm a Registered Social Worker trained in couple and family therapy. I believe that some of the most painful moments in our lives can also be the most transformational. I work with people who would never in a million years wish for what they are going through and I support them as they courageously process what life has dealt them.

Your life looks great on the outside. You have all the things that should make you happy but you don’t feel that way. You may be struggling with anxiety, unresolved past trauma, or relationship dissatisfaction. Maybe you've been using substances more than usual to cope with feeling overwhelmed, either on edge or just completely disconnected like you’re running on autopilot. You’re used to handling your own problems so it can be hard to ask for help. Other people don’t understand, they think you are fine.

You're here because you're consumed by racing thoughts, self-doubt, stress, and worry. You find yourself overthinking everything and end up feeling exhausted, on edge, and bad about yourself. You're unsure why this is happening and want answers. If this sounds like you, I commend you for being here. It is absolutely exhausting and debilitating feeling this way, and seeking help isn't easy. The good news? You’re not alone and there are tools backed by research that you can learn to help you understand what is happening and why, to process it all, and to manage these feelings so that you can regain a sense of control and fulfillment.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
