Neurofeedback & Trauma Therapy: The impacts of trauma rewire the brain and nervous system to experience the world as a threatening place. This adaptation alters how we relate to ourselves and others, and it leads us away from authentic identity. Trauma includes events like past childhood abuse, emotional neglect, grief, rejection, chronic pain and illness, to name a few. You may become stressed, anxious, experience intrusive thoughts, fear, and rage. You may feel alone, easily triggered, trapped, and like there’s a void within—like you just can’t be yourself again. Yet, you have no clue that it all stems from unprocessed trauma.

You’ve been through experiences that still affect how safe, connected, or confident you feel, especially in your body and relationships. Maybe you notice tension that never seems to go away, your heart racing for no reason, or a sense of numbness or disconnection. Trauma often shows up in the body long after the event has passed, influencing how we think, feel, and relate to others. You might be longing to feel calm again, to trust your body, enjoy closeness, and move through life without the past constantly resurfacing.

If you’re grieving, overwhelmed, exhausted from being strong for too long, or feeling lost in a major life transition—you’re not alone. For more than a 14 years, I’ve walked alongside people facing some of life’s hardest moments: the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, complicated family patterns, traumatic experiences, and the deeper questions about the suffering many of us endure. I’m not your average therapist - at least that is what my clients say. I offer a more human approach to traditional therapy, with all the clinical skills and a focus on emotional health and wellbeing.

Providing a balance of support and challenge, my approach to healing is holistic and comprehensive. I believe that each individual has all of the inner resources they need to achieve a sense of balance and equanimity. My role is merely to provide a safe, non-judgmental container in which they can reach their own integration - cognitively, emotionally and somatically. I aim to assist the individual's journey-making process through offering new ways at looking through the lens which often gets obscured by many mitigating factors. Clarity is the goal.

Accepting New Clients-Your life looks great on the outside. You have all the things that should make you happy but you don’t feel that way. You may be struggling with anxiety, unresolved past trauma, or relationship dissatisfaction. Maybe you've been using substances more than usual to cope with feeling overwhelmed, either on edge or just completely disconnected like you’re running on autopilot. You’re used to handling your own problems so it can be hard to ask for help. Other people don’t understand, they think you are fine.

We all experience pain and blockages that get our attention and tell us that something is wrong. Seeking counselling is a natural, healthy way to take action and heal ourselves. Sometime life's challenges can be an opportunity to grow and get to know ourselves better. I work with individuals, couples and families. I enjoy working with adolescents and see all ages in my practice.

Aspire Therapy is the private practice of Registered Psychotherapist Deborah Callander in Mississauga. ASPIRE is an acronym for A Supportive Partner in Recovery, which I believe describes my approach well. I draw primarily on Internal Family Systems therapy to explore the sources and development of the suffering in your life, critical to healing. Coping with pain by self medicating eventually does more harm than good. If you've tried to make changes but life has become unsustainable I can help. Let's discuss the options available to you for recovery.

You find yourself struggling to reach your goals and the life you have always dreamt about. The pressures of life block you from finding the freedom you crave. You feel over-whelmed with work, bills, caring for loved ones, and not enough time to do it all. It seems you are trapped. Low self-esteem, worry, and negative thoughts are stuck in your head. The truth is life can be much better. I know what it is like to feel anxious and down, trying to juggle it all to just to survive to the next day. My work is dedicated to making sure my clients don't stay trapped.

Making sense of your behaviours and experiences can help you become a better version of yourself. Life and the relationships we form have a way of launching feelings and experiences our way that we're not always prepared to handle. Guilt that haunts our past, buried beliefs that enhance anxieties or despair that paralyzes us from moving forward can create negative behaviours, feelings, and thoughts. The way you live and approach your life can be shifted into a more positive direction to allow you to increase your self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-awareness. Be a better version of yourself.

My approach is simple: understand what's actually driving the problem, then treat it with the right tool. Sometimes that's EMDR to process a traumatic memory that talk alone hasn't reached. Sometimes it's CBT to break a pattern of anxious thinking, or focused couples work to change how a relationship functions day to day. I practice in English, Ukrainian, and Russian, and I bring the same directness to therapy in all three.

Currently accepting new clients for youth and adults. Do you struggle with feeling meh? Not feeling true joy and feeling like life is passing by while you are simply getting through it? Maybe you are functioning on the outside, going to work or school, keeping up with responsibilities, showing up for others, but internally something feels off. This can show up as anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, or a loss of sense of self that affects your ability to feel present and connected. Do you feel overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time? You are holding onto hope that this feeling will pass, but you are not sure how to.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
