Psychotherapy is a creative process where you invite a therapist into your world to help with a troubling personal issue. Asking for help can make you feel vulnerable. This is especially true when considering therapy. You can wish for help and yet also feel reluctant to reach out, because doing so likely means facing up to deeply personal and painful subjects.

Life can be challenging. It brings moments of joy, moments of struggle, and everything in between. During difficult times, emotions like sadness, anxiety, fear, or hopelessness can feel overwhelming. I certainly do understand what it feels like to be at the center of one of these storms, and I want to help you navigate your own — to learn to drop an anchor and steady yourself. Even painful chapters can hold meaning, and they shape the way I approach therapy: as a place for growth and resilience, where we cultivate a supportive space that is ultimately centered on helping you.

Do you want to try something different which will challenge you and direct your awareness to how you are living your life? Awareness is the first step in making any change. Awareness gives you a choice: do I keep doing what I have been doing or do I want to "try on" a new behaviour and see what changes? Together we will work through issues which are interfering with your ability to live your life fully in the here and now.

I see couples in therapy who tell me they are quarrelling too much or who have drifted apart. Often, they need help with slowing down, expressing their softer feelings and understanding their partner's emotions. I also see couples whose lives have been turned upside down by an extra-marital affair and worry that there will never be trust again. I help them learn how an affair doesn't have to mean the end of a relationship. I also see individuals with anxiety, depression and trauma from childhood interfering with their present lives. Young adults and their parents see me for family therapy to improve their relationships.

Many of us struggle with anxiety, low mood, and self-doubt, trying to manage difficult thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, often on our own. The stresses of daily life, challenging relationships, and unresolved issues from the past can weigh us down, making it hard to move forward in positive and meaningful ways. Sharing personal struggles with someone isn't easy, but with the right person and the right support, it can be transformative.

After studying clinical psychology in Europe, I worked for more than two decades in a city hospital. I primarily treated adults struggling with a range of issues, including anxiety and phobias, depression, trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorder, sexual dysfunctions, and relational issues. My work aimed to help these individuals overcome their problems, improve their quality of life, and foster their personal growth. In addition to my clinical experience, I've had the unique opportunity to offer psychotherapeutic services in war-affected regions, working closely with refugees and soldiers suffering from PTSD and war-related issues.

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
