All of this is possible with Exposure and Response Prevention ( ERP), which is the most evidence-based treatment for OCD.
Have you or a loved one struggled with OCD for a long time? Has the OCD either worsened or continued to significantly interfere with functioning in daily life? Being tormented by excessive thoughts that go against one’s personal values and attempting to stop, control or neutralize these thoughts with compulsive behaviours or mental rituals is the cycle of OCD. The good news is that breaking this cycle is possible. Common emotions that you are probably feeling are anxiety, distress, frustration, guilt, shame, depression, anger, and hopelessness. Please understand that you are not alone as OCD affects 2% of the entire population.

We specialize in the treatment of OCD and anxiety disorders (Panic, Agoraphobia, Social Anxiety, GAD), using CBT, ERP, & ACT approaches.
You may not show it, but you feel stuck. Your anxiety and fears prevent you from taking steps forward. Instead, you find yourself procrastinating and avoiding. You are consumed by doubt and overwhelmed by worry and unwanted, intrusive, uncontrollable thoughts. You try hard to avoid those thoughts, but they keep coming back. The more you fight them, the stickier they become. You try to tell yourself that the thoughts are meaningless, but somehow you feel you can never be sure. What if after all, something horrible will happen? What if the thoughts mean something important? Your friends and family keep telling you not to worry and explain that everything is just in your head. This reassurance helps for a bit, but very soon you are back to endless "What if? " questions. You tried therapy before. The therapist tried to convince you that what you fear is unlikely to happen and taught you relaxation, breathing, meditation, and thought records. But it didn't help and made you even more hopeless. You'd like to break free from your worries and fears and start living your life. If you are reading this profile, you may be finally considering making a significant change. We are here to help!

My approach is grounded in Client-Centered Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Exposure and Response Prevention ( ERP) and Mindfulness-based approaches.
Are you feeling stuck? Many see therapy as an intimidating space with one-sided conversations and a professional who analyzes you from behind a clipboard. I see therapy as a space where we meet as two flawed human beings and try to work at things together. I want to help you get unstuck from painful thoughts and feelings that are getting in your way and help you find meaning. I will do my best to understand what matters to you and what gets in your way. We will learn practical ways to overcome your obstacles.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Counsellors

Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?

Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviours that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.

Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioural therapy?

Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioural change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.

How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?

While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.

What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?

The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
