I am happy to work with an extensive range of clients and organize my practice around providing Client-Centred Therapy grounded in empirically-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Additionally, I have lived experience as a first responder and am passionate about addressing the unique challenges associated with fulfilling such roles. In my experience working with people over the last 10 years, I've found that often their challenges are best addressed first and foremost by being heard; this act of listening is a gift that unlocks the resources hidden within.

Problems have a way, often many ways, of intruding and trodding through our lives, in ways that undermine our wishes, our hopes and the relationships with people we hold dear. They can leave us believing we are powerless and the situation is hopeless. Problems can use language that make them seem all powerful, sometimes the words themselves can make them appear ‘almost permanent’ (depression, anxiety, trauma, and so on). They can cling to us.. Come consider the other vibrant and sustaining stories that are seeking you out... Come stand in a space where we actively pursue anti-colonial ways of talking/working.

Sometimes people get stuck. Individuals and couples come to me for counselling to talk about a variety of problems - things like conflict in relationships, anxiety, depression, overwhelming stress, abuse, grief, vocational crisis, or anger. A counselling relationship helps people to move from understanding issues to co-creating solutions - solutions that shrink and manage problems. I use an integrative approach, drawing on different counselling methods depending on what works best for the client, including practices from cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, and solution-based therapy. I can help you to move through difficult times with courage, accountability, and positive resolve.

Disconnected. Broken. Hopeless. Powerless. Stuck. Many men tell me this is how they feel in our first session. Taking the first step to make change in your life and accept support can sometimes feel the most challenging and overwhelming. As a male therapist, I have learned that working with men requires a focus on practical solutions, a safe and comfortable environment, a therapist who understands the unique personal and societal challenges men face, an emphasis on self-compassion and self-acceptance, and a willingness to address underlying issues. I work with clients who suffer from various emotional difficulties such as depression, anxiety and trauma. I focus on educating the client what she or he is going through and together we design strategies that help cope with the emotional difficulties. An important emphasis is placed on sleep hygiene because healthy sleep often helps restore emotional well-being. We also offer physical rehabilitation at our clinic for clients who have chronic pain and other physical problems co-existing with emotional difficulties.

When overwhelming emotions limit the pursuit of our responsibilities or passions in life there are effective strategies that can help regulate and minimize the emotional storms as well as provide the resilience needed to thrive in your life despite those storms. Life can be very difficult, unlike physical pain that is usually hard to ignore therefore treatment is sought after, emotional pain is unfortunately often ignored hoping it goes away. Starting therapy can be daunting but it’s one of the best investments you can make in yourself. I strive to create a non-judgemental, collaborative space guided by compassionate curiosity in which we can explore your fears, anxieties, relationships and general life challenges. Working together, we explore new ways of understanding your inner self, your world and your relationships and examine old patterns that may no longer serve you well and seek to create new ones that are more effective.

Have you ever felt that what is happening in your relationships and your life, even your own behaviors, is not what you want? My specialized approach to understanding and changing emotional patterns and behavior can help you feel confidence and satisfaction in yourself, your relationships, and your life. Our sessions will focus on enhancing self awareness and putting oneself in a position of choice. In therapy we will use methods which separate triggers and reactivity so you can decide what you really want and how you behave. Identifying reactivity reveals why you sometimes feel you are not choosing your behaviors.

Stuck in a bit of a rut? Maybe haven't been feeling like yourself for a while? Thinking about changing in your something but don't know what? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are not alone. We are all human beings, and we all have it rough sometimes (and man, can it get rough!). I believe that we all have the tools we need to move in our desired direction - sometimes we just need a reminder that they are there, and sometimes we need a little help dusting them off.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
