Sessions involve a variety of hands-on tools like art and play to make connections and lasting change.
Mindful awareness is used in sessions to understand how our past shapes how we perceive and make sense of the world. By bringing gentle awareness to how we engage with that world, creates opportunities to make powerful changes. It is an amazing feeling getting out of our heads and connecting with the world around us.

Do you feel stuck in your own head, overwhelmed in relationships, or uncomfortable just being with yourself? Maybe you overthink everything, second-guess your decisions, or feel like you’re never quite enough. You might be carrying stress, anxiety, or low mood that doesn’t seem to go away. Sometimes, these patterns are tied to past experiences you may not even recognize as trauma. Anxiety, depression, irritability, and emotional ups and downs can be signs your system is trying to cope and over time it becomes exhausting, overwhelming and sometimes all consuming.

For younger clients, I also incorporate creative and engaging strategies that could include art therapy.
I primarily work with adolescents and adults who want to feel calmer, more confident, and more secure in themselves and their relationships. Many of my clients come in feeling overwhelmed, stuck in patterns, or unsure how to navigate challenges in their emotions, relationships, or day-to-day life. For teens, this may look like anxiety, school stress, friendship struggles, or navigating big life changes. For adults, it often involves relationship challenges, emotional overwhelm, or difficulty feeling understood and connected. Together, we work toward greater clarity, emotional balance, and healthier, more fulfilling connections.

What that might look like is slowing down to feel what's coming up in your body and emotions throughout the session, and using other methods such as art-making to unpack your thoughts and feelings.
Are you experiencing feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, grief and other overwhelming emotions? Are you navigating the lasting effects of trauma and its impact your identity and relationships? Often our symptoms are part of survival mechanisms that helped us in the past. Unfortunately, they can lead to unwanted behaviours in our present lives that can cause us shame and self-loathing. What you really deserve is compassion and care towards your pain. It takes a great deal of courage to embark on a path of healing and growth, and I consider it a privilege to work along side you throughout your journey.

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
