I am a trained Marriage and Family Therapist .
"...we live by stories, we also live in them. One way or another we are living the stories planted in us early or along the way, or we are also living the stories we planted - knowingly or unknowingly - in ourselves. We live stories that either give our lives meaning or negate it with meaninglessness. If we change the stories we live by, quite possibly we change our lives." Ben Okri

This can lead you to feeling more connected to your family and friends, purpose in life, feeling in tune with future goals and the life you would like to live.
I serve a diverse set of communities, including people of colour, indigenous communities, as well as immigrants. What my clients have in common is a theme of anxiety, depression and feeling stagnant. I specialize in the areas of mental health, trauma and infertility. Other struggles may include feeling lost in your career or your marriage, feeling unable to move forward or feel fulfilled in your life. Often worrying about how life is unfolding and how to move forward without compromising your current situation. As a result, feeling sad, unmotivated, stuck and confused is weighing you down.

Have you arrived at a point where problem solving on your own has reached its limit ? This happens to all of us and I believe it to be part of the human condition. However, not every problem finds its solution with the usual support of family , friends and wellness practices. An experienced and trained professional can help be a catalyst to progress beyond the limitations of depression, anxiety, past trauma, mental health issues, personal and family problems.

It is important that you find a therapist who is a good fit for you and your family .
Parenthood is hard! You know that showing up for your kids helps them grow up to be resilient, confident, and secure adults. But when your tank is empty and you are feeling exhausted, you aren't showing up in the way you want to. You live with guilt, self-doubt and anxiety leaving you feeling angry and lost. You find yourself yelling more than you'd like and resorting to old ways of reacting to your children's behaviour. You're tired and struggle to make it through the day. You want to do better. You long to feel energized, grounded and certain as you make daily parenting choices that will help your family feel more at ease.

I work with individuals, families and couples struggling with trauma, relationship struggles, tough family dynamics and parenting. When you have experienced adverse events in your childhood or recent trauma you may have difficulties regulating your mood, feeling joy, advocating for yourself, and may often feel unworthy or undeserving of positive things. Life events can leave us worried about being both physically and socially safe, as well as lacking a sense of belonging. Anxiety is a common feeling, leading to low mood, anger, intrusive thoughts, failed or chaotic relationships. Living this way can lead to burnout.

I integrate my training in Narrative Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help my clients navigate anxiety, depression, and a range of mental health disorders.
Now Accepting New Clients! Throughout our lives, we often come up against many difficult situations and experiences that shape how we view ourselves. Our internal stories created by these events can lead to ongoing conflicts and distress. At times, this can leave us feeling hopeless and cause us to question our strengths and abilities. This is where I help to support you in gaining self-awareness and creating lasting change to reshape your self-image, confidence, personal relationships and regain control over your life. Within my practice, I ensure honesty, compassion, authenticity and genuineness.

The focus in therapy sessions is on creating a safe environment for clients to tell their story and take the steps to create the changes needed to help achieve their goals. In therapy, I draw inspiration from my own real-life experiences that includes a healthy and happy decades-long marriage which taught me a great deal about family dynamics and their impact on the various stages of the family life cycle. As a student advisor for 16 years at the University of Waterloo, I advised students from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds on a range of issues while helping them establish their academic and career goals.

For 14 years I was working in the community and family health team settings, while maintaining an ongoing private practice.
My priority is for you to feel welcomed and safe in my office. Our sessions will be guided by your presenting issues and may explore relationships both past and present and the impact of those experiences on your current situation. You may be coming to address issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, stress, difficult life transitions, past or present abuse or relationship challenges. We will look at patterns that may be present in your life and explore new ways of being.

I have worked in the areas of mental health, addiction and family services for over ten years.
I believe you are the expert in your life and even though you may not know it, you have all the answers within you. Unfortunately sometimes life can make accessing these answers difficult. Trauma, mental health issues, addiction, work and family pressures can all impact our ability to connect to our inner wisdom and happiness. I have found through personal experience that talking to a trained professional in psychotherapy who is kind, caring, non judgmental and emotionally attuned can support the process of being able to listen to ourselves and work towards living a life that is free of suffering.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
