Transitions due to separation and divorce, loss, immigration as well as self-esteem, anger management, family of origin are part of my expertise.
"...we live by stories, we also live in them. One way or another we are living the stories planted in us early or along the way, or we are also living the stories we planted - knowingly or unknowingly - in ourselves. We live stories that either give our lives meaning or negate it with meaninglessness. If we change the stories we live by, quite possibly we change our lives." Ben Okri

We work with folks who have experienced trauma, sexual assault, adverse childhood experiences, situational stressors, divorce, grief and loss, body image and eating disorder challenges, cultural challenges, amongst many others.
Do you feel you may not be living as an authentic version of yourself, stuck in the past, struggling to move forward? Do you feel overwhelmed with anxiety, flashbacks, anxious-avoidant patterns, or impulsive tendencies? We all have an innate need to feel seen, heard, validated, and safe. Seeking therapy is a courageous step towards self-awareness and healing. The discrepancies between our rational and emotional brain can make us feel disconnected and recognizing our internal dualities can be helpful. Reconnecting with our inner child, processing our past, and holding space for our emotions can be liberating and empowering.

I love working with couples and families to help create new understanding for each other and finding new ways to communicate including those navigating separation and divorce.
Parenting isn’t easy and kids and teens don’t come with a handbook. We put high expectations on ourselves to be “good parents” and are often left feeling inadequate and overwhelmed. Kids' behaviour can be baffling and for parents whose child has received a mental health diagnosis wondering "what do we do now" are common. I created Thriving Families Counselling to provide a place in which parents could receive new understanding of their child or teen, explore how their own life experiences have influenced their approach to parenting and for families together to learn new ways to create healthy communication and functioning.

Through the activity of play I help children to make sense of difficult life experiences (e.g. divorce, death of a loved one) and navigate the big feelings (e.g. anxiety, anger, sadness) that are often at the root of challenging behaviour.
Play is a child’s natural way of communicating; we can explore various issues they might find difficult to express in other ways. I work with both the parents and the children to understand and address the roots of the problem, and interpret the behaviour with insight into the underlying emotions, in order to impact lasting change

I have worked with a variety of clients over the years. I have had much success in treating anxiety, depression, stress, school performance, life satisfaction, stress related to gender and sexuality, and parenting. While it is always ideal for a client to walk in the door ready to make changes I also enjoy supporting individuals in getting to that point. Someone who is willing to collaborate and create a space, therapeutic relationship and set of goals together with me will usually see success on some level. I practice from a strength based model.

I am a Social Worker with over 20 years of experience, registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. I am covered under many extended benefit plans, and works with several Employee Assistance Programs. Navigating relationships, stressful work situations, and sometimes just day to day life can be challenging, and helping people get back to being "themselves", or in some cases, aspects of themselves that they have aspired to be, is what I enjoy doing most. If you are struggling with something, and can't quite get back on your feet, I would be privileged to work with you to meet your goals.

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?
Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.
What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?
There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.
When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?
When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.
How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
