When you experience a traumatic event (no matter how BIG or small), you can struggle with a variety of symptoms. You might notice nightmares, depression, anxiety, changes in your relationships, feeling on edge, even having intrusive memories of the events. You may have tried to deal with these issues by numbing out, avoiding triggers, or even talking about the events, but nothing seems to change.

Accepting new clients!
I primarily work with cIients who have experienced trauma (from childhood or recent events) and those who are impacted by poor regulation (being unable to modulate mood or attention). Trauma and dysregulation can result in being overwhelmed by big feelings or from sensory information, embarrassed by one’s own reactive behaviour, unable to think or remember, feel a lack of control over direction in life, or unable to adjust to life changes. It happens to people of all ages.
The people I see usually say they want to heal from past events, or to sharpen the way their brain works.

Accepting New Clients-Your life looks great on the outside. You have all the things that should make you happy but you don’t feel that way. You may be struggling with anxiety, unresolved past trauma, or relationship dissatisfaction. Maybe you've been using substances more than usual to cope with feeling overwhelmed, either on edge or just completely disconnected like you’re running on autopilot. You’re used to handling your own problems so it can be hard to ask for help. Other people don’t understand, they think you are fine.

Maybe you've spent most of your life with this quiet, nagging feeling that something is just... off. Maybe you feel things more intensely than the people around you. You react in ways you don't always understand, and no matter how hard you work at it, the shame, the anger, or that hollow emptiness keeps finding its way back. It's not just what happened to you, it feels like something that's about you, specifically. Maybe you've been told you're too much. Maybe you've learned to hide it so well that no one sees it. Either way, you've been surviving this for a long time. And some part of you is finally ready to understand why.

We are all on a path of healing and discovery that leads, eventually and inevitably, to the realization of our true potential. I see psychotherapy as a powerful companion on this journey - it is a helpful friend that can help ease the burden during dark times, and it is a ray of light that can guide us more quickly beyond our own limitations when we are moving towards a goal. My practice is based in modern cognitive therapy and the neuroscience of trauma, while always anchored in the wisdom of mindfulness, acceptance and nondual awareness.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
