In relationships, you may find yourself walking on eggshells around your partner or feeling like you have to hide what you really think and feel around them. You might even feel like you have given up things that you really want in order to keep the family together. When your relationship leaves you feeling disconnected, sad, angry, consumed with anxiety or feeling resigned, it takes away from our ability to repair. We all need love and connection to survive and without it we isolate and start to lose hope in ourselves and our relationships.

I have extensive experience offering counseling support, psychoeducation, and advocacy to people navigating complex systems in education, health, criminal justice, family law, and child welfare.
When we are struggling to manage life challenges, our ability to cope can become strained. Such stressors can affect our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in unhealthy ways. They can also show up as frustration, irritability, and/or anger. Exploring relevant past experiences, with skillful therapeutic interventions, I support individuals, couples, and families to understand what is happening for them in the present. Believing that the client is the expert in their lives, I also help people to develop care plans intended to challenge unhelpful ways of functioning in their world while restoring feelings of happiness and hopefulness.

My trauma-informed practice includes (Mental health, Abuse, Violence, Family -Conflict, Pre-marital & Couple support, Clinical Supervision & School concerns).
I am so glad that you are contemplating the start of a 'therapeutic journey' as life can sometimes feel overwhelming and difficult to manage on your own. I know it takes ‘courage’ to reach out for support, and I understand that we sometimes need a 'place' to share our burdens. I also recognize that it can be ‘scary’ to seek help, but my practice includes a ‘non-traditional’ holistic ‘Christian & Biblical Perspective’, where we can work together to reach your full potential as a child of 'God'. Contact me, as it would be my privilege to work with you, during this time in your life. So let's get started.

Hello, Warriors and Freedom Fighters: It is safe to state that we'll go thru life with an aim and desire to conquer challenges and prosper within our relationships, marriage, family , and career. But life can take us down a one-way street we had no thought or desire of entering, and we may have lost our way emotionally or spiritually. The impact of this may have led to stress, anxiety, and a breakdown along the way. As these elements can hinder the quality of life we were meant to have, one may need professional assistance to navigate feelings and focus.

Welcome to Olive Tree Counselling and Psychotherapy! I believe the tree is a great metaphor for helping clients understand how their current difficulties are often rooted in earlier experiences. Like the olive tree, I believe people are inherently resilient and capable of thriving in spite of the challenges they may face. Reaching out for help can be a daunting experience, but I can offer a safe and empathetic space for you to gain insight into and process past hurts, explore healthier ways to cope, live a more meaningful and authentic life, and learn how to communicate your needs and boundaries with others.

We may rely on distractions but we know that it’s time to look for support that will lead us into maintaining a healthier relationship with our mental health. I work with adults and children 9 and up who are seeking treatment in family conflict, anger management, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideations, self-esteem, school-related issues and women’s issues. I also provide guidance for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, domestic violence, couple and family counselling, life transitions, parent and teen conflicts and women's issues.
Everyone embarks on unique journeys involving various overwhelming challenges including emotional and mental health issues, substance abuse and relationship issues. My colleagues and I fully understand that when two or more people cope with similar circumstances, no two minds function alike. Therefore, my services instill clients with how to love themselves through comprehensive, mental, emotional and spiritual enrichment regardless of their age, social or ethnic background, or physical capacities. Overall, the greatest satisfaction comes from seeing clients reach self-actualization by gaining strength, confidence and empowerment to confront their own inner conflicts "for we all smile in the same language".

Shaila also provides parent and family counselling to understand their child with learning disabilities so they can learn to manage behaviour and their own mental wellbeing.
Shaila is skilled in treating learning disorders such as ADHD and ASD. Shaila has over 5 years of clinical experience working with children and adults with learning disabilities. Feeling overwhelmed and frustrated because certain things just don’t come as easy to you as they do to others is an incredibly debilitating feeling. Fighting the anxiety and depression that can develop from such debilitation is not easy. Especially when you don’t have many who can understand you or provide you with the tools you need to succeed. It’s important to work with your challenges rather than against them.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
