I am a trauma-informed therapist that utilizes a variety of different treatments such as CBT, Emotion-Focused Therapy (
EFT
), Psychodynamic Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness Interventions and Humanistic Therapy.
As we journey through life, unfair things happen. The associated thoughts, feelings and people can stay with us as painful memories, create a sense of burden and influence our future expectations. While we can't change the past, it is under our control to change the way we look at what happened. As challenging events and relationships unfold, we can control how we respond. We do this by becoming more aware of automatic negative reactions and replacing them with healthier thoughts, feelings and behaviours. In sessions, we explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, behaviours and interpersonal patterns that cause us to feel "stuck" in life.

I utilize attachment lens using
EFT
& Gottman Therapy to help couples work through their negative patterns of interactions, learning to better manage conflicts, ability to regulate difficult emotions to build a happier, closer & healthy relationships.
Do you find yourself stuck in a same negative loop with your partner? Do you feel you are walking on eggshells to avoid conflict? Are we roommates now? Do you long to be seen & heard by your partner? I see you & your pain, lots of couples experience this at some point in their relationship & as a result start feeling lonely. They learn to protect themselves by avoiding conflict or yelling to grab attention which breeds resentment, emotional disconnect & impacts trust between the partners. As a first generation south asian immigrant, I am curious about the impact of social & cultural norms in shaping us & our internal working model.

The gold standard of evidence-based treatment for couples is called
Emotionally Focused
Therapy (
EFT
).
As a husband and father, I understand the challenges we can encounter in our most intimate circle-and beyond. My small practice is focused on journeying with couples. I do also work with individuals and deeply enjoy this aspect of my practice. The couples I work with experience issues ranging from affair recovery, emotional connection and engagement, relational injuries or life stressors that are acting as a barrier to connection. The individuals I support are dealing with various experiences from anxiety to addiction to childhood trauma. My "ideal" clients might be excited for therapy, concerned about therapy, or dreading therapy!

I utilize a person centered approach, bringing in tools from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), integrative trauma and attachment model (ITATM), emotional freedom therapy (
EFT
) as well as hypnotherapy.
My approach as a psychotherapist takes the perspective that talking to others who share similar experiences can aid in understanding and balancing the unique expectations of family and cultural values, with the society in which we live. I am especially passionate about helping women feel empowered, and within the South Asian community specifically, helping females to understand their worth, as that is something many of us grow up doubting. Research indicates affinity & culturally diverse therapy is needed for South Asian communities to support the silent mental health crisis.

Emotionally Focused Counsellors
Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.
Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.
What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.
What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
