Does your mind often tell you there's one more thing you need to do or figure out before you can relax or enjoy the moment? Do you replay conversations, question your decisions, worry about letting people down, and put pressure on yourself to get things right? Over time it becomes exhausting trying to keep up with everything your mind is asking of you, while losing touch with your need to feel rested, connected, and present. We can work together to help you feel more confident making decisions, to listen to your needs, and to respond to life's challenges without constantly second guessing yourself.

As a Registered Psychotherapist and trauma-informed therapist, I bring over twenty years of experience in mental health, specialising in anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, attachment, couples, men's issues, and first responders. I believe in the transformative power of the therapeutic relationship. Here you are encouraged to express yourself freely, without fear of judgement, and feeling heard is fundamental to our well-being. But being heard is where the work begins, not where it ends. From that foundation we go deeper, to the emotions, beliefs and patterns at the root of what brought you here.

I think of therapy as not only focusing on the “black dots” on a paper—the struggles, stress, or places where we feel stuck, but also gently exploring the space on the paper that often goes unnoticed. We can together find ways to cope with the “black dots” in your life, while also making space to notice what is already there but unseen—your strengths, inner resources, resilience, and parts of yourself you may not yet be fully aware of. My approach is about holding both realities: acknowledging what feels heavy and difficult, while also helping you reconnect with what supports you and allows you to move forward with more clarity.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
