Going to therapy, particularly for the first time, can be difficult. You may want someone who can give you direction or tools, who you can also connect with and feel supported by. At my practice, I strive to provide a good therapeutic relationship with someone who is warm, caring, competent and knowledgeable.

I would like to acknowledge and honour your consideration to reach out for support. It is not always easy and can feel vulnerable. As Maya Angelou said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” You are the expert of your life, however most of us need extra support to cope with the challenges that can arise in our daily lives. In today’s climate you may be feeling exhausted and access to the usual resources may be limited. This can be a lonely feeling and may be described as trauma – anything that you lack the resources to get through.

Clients I work really well with are interested in collaborating and brainstorming about the challenging situations and difficulties in their lives. Overtime, we work together to develop understanding and solutions. I particularly enjoy working with individuals who suffer from ADHD or are impacted by someone who has ADHD. Of course clients with ADHD also often have co-morbid conditions like anxiety, depression and PTSD; I am very happy to help them with the issues related to these problems as well. Also, I enjoy completing complex psychological assessments; I find them challenging in a very good way.

I operate with the premise that much of life’s suffering contains within it an inner meaning, waiting to be discovered, seen, and realized. And where one suffers is often the place that contains the seed of new development and personal growth. What is being asked of us is to take the steps to enter deep within ourselves, in order to see what needs be seen, feel what needs be felt, and do what needs be done. Often times it is in the process of entering into ourselves that we find the “attitude” that meets our true needs.

Un-controlled emotions can sabotage areas of our lives. Are you consistently angry? Or have anxiety and you're losing an appetite for life? Angry outburst can leave you embarrassed or potentially harm important relationships. You may feel a sense that life is out of control when you lash out, especially if it's towards people who didn't deserve it. High anxiety on the other hand can lead to insomnia, depression and the inability to cope with every day life. You may be asking, "Can I ever feel normal again?"

Difficult times are inevitable. We all experience them and can sometimes use extra support. Whether the struggles are due to relationships, work, mental health, or anything else, they are all valid and deserving of attention, empathy, and support. Maybe you are feeling stuck and cannot see a way out of your current situation, maybe you have found yourself in a seemingly unbreakable pattern, or maybe you know how to break the pattern, but just can’t seem to will yourself to do it. I will provide you a safe and non-judgmental environment to help you organize your thoughts, identify root causes of issues, and plan next steps.

For some people, counselling can be a scary thing - sitting across from a stranger, not knowing what to expect, and not entirely sure if they want to share their story. I get it. That was my experience when I first saw a counsellor years ago. But what I quickly learned is that counselling is simply a conversation between two people who are mutually devoted to achieving a common goal. And as a counsellor, it is my desire to give you a safe place to have that conversation, to hear your thoughts and emotions, to understand your story, and then to journey with you toward a place of mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
