Hi, my name is Elizabeth Idowu and I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). My aim is to provide a safe space where my clients can feel seen and heard, as they embark on a journey towards peace, progress and healing. As a Nigerian-Canadian woman, I have both personally endured and been exposed to the struggles of others who look like me and share similar experiences. That is why I make it a priority to create and hold space for those who may struggle with their identity, and relate to experiences of feeling unheard and unseen.

You’ve likely spent your life feeling 'too much,' 'too loud,' or just inherently different. Maybe you’re an adult navigating a late-in-life ADHD or Autism diagnosis, or a parent watching your child struggle to fit into a world not built for their nervous system. You are exhausted from 'masking', constantly performing to meet neurotypical expectations, and you’re looking for a space where you don’t have to translate your experience into someone else’s language. You don't want to be 'fixed'; you want to be understood and learn how to work with your brain instead of against it. You deserve to be seen.

Sometimes life can be difficult and these challenges can cause a sense of suffering in ourselves and those we care about. It can all feel overwhelming and exhausting, making it difficult to know what to do or where to turn for help. It takes courage to reach out for support so that you don’t have to suffer alone. Counselling can provide the opportunity to learn to share and process one’s struggles in a safe and non-judgemental space. Learning how to foster self-directed kindness and self-compassion can help nurture an individual’s personal growth and resilience.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the stress of daily life? Perhaps you are feeling anxious or depressed. You may feel burdened by past trauma or a current crisis, or maybe you are experiencing conflict at home with family, friends or at work. It can sometimes seem impossible to find balance, inner peace, and happiness. Firstly, you are not alone, but your struggles are personal, and can feel isolating and lonely. The truth is that many people find it difficult to acknowledge that they are suffering, and reaching out for help can be tough to do. Sometimes, we forget that taking care of ourselves is important and also worth the effort.

To the world we can appear to be hard working, confident, a good planner, helpful! On the inside we can live in permanent conflict. Fear of Failure, Living in 'Survival Mode', Imposter Syndrome, Overthinking. You worry about the effects on your body, the discomfort, the tension. You worry who will notice. You worry you are not enough. When is the last time you felt like yourself? When we don't feel like we are being our best selves, life can be draining. Anxiety, Trauma, Depression and Low Self-Esteem can make daily tasks seem daunting, overwhelming and never ending.

My passion is to help people regain their inner peace and happiness to live a pleasurable fulfilled life. Life is full of ups, downs and challenges that we are often not prepared for. It does not matter how many times you get knocked down, but the what matters comes from how many times you get up. I believe the greatest accomplishment is who you become while picking yourself back up. Each new day gives you a fresh start to get back on track and to have the courage to rebuild yourself the way you desire. In therapy we would work collaboratively to address your needs and to determine how best to meet these needs.

Emotionally Focused Counsellors
Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
