Before coming to see me couples are tired of having the same conflicts again and again, they feel lost and as though they are at an impasse, feeling that the trust is broken, that they are totally disconnected and don’t know how to fix things. I can help. Just like the couples I have worked with, I want you to be able to identify the negative cycle you may find yourselves in, to become a team against the problems, to rediscover your connection and heal past hurt.

Are you looking for relief from anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, panic attacks, phobias, or insomnia?
On the flipside, our thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and our body can also re-inforce each other in a positive way, so that we can send these same patterns on an upward spiral. I have always been curious about the process of creating positive change and transformation, and in helping clients to connect with meaning and purpose in their lives.

I think of therapy as not only focusing on the “black dots” on a paper—the struggles, stress, or places where we feel stuck, but also gently exploring the space on the paper that often goes unnoticed. We can together find ways to cope with the “black dots” in your life, while also making space to notice what is already there but unseen—your strengths, inner resources, resilience, and parts of yourself you may not yet be fully aware of. My approach is about holding both realities: acknowledging what feels heavy and difficult, while also helping you reconnect with what supports you and allows you to move forward with more clarity.

I work with adults struggling with a range of concerns including insomnia and sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, grief, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, fertility concerns, psychosis, substance abuse, relationship problems, and generally navigating the stresses of life.
My therapeutic style is warm and empathic, drive by evidence-based modalities such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and emotion-focused therapy. Research shows us time and again that the therapeutic relationship is essential to treatment success, so I concentrate on building a strong, nonjudmental, relaxed dynamic with my clients.

I believe that clients deserve to be heard and understood as individuals, and that treatment should be flexibly tailored to meet their needs and goals. Rather than adopting a “one size fits all” approach to therapy, clients who choose to work with me will find that I create a highly collaborative therapeutic environment where they can learn customized strategies for addressing life's challenges, promoting personal growth, and enhancing well-being. I enjoy working with adults, couples and adolescents looking for guidance and support with their goals.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
