While my focus is on supporting racialized as Black, Indigenous and other racial equity-seeking peoples navigating identity-based, intergenerational, cultural and racial traumas, I welcome anyone aligned with my values.
Even though I’ve successfully worked with children, youth, families, and adults navigating multifaceted mental health challenges, my focus is now on communal healing and collective liberation. I offer wellness and resilience-informed workshops and am accepting social workers and psychotherapists for inclusive, and equity- responsive clinical supervision.

FAQ - Black Counselling
As a Black Canadian, why might I wish to see a therapist who is Black Canadian?
Having a therapist who shares your race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of your background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted, however, that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client's background or race.

Are there Black therapists who specialize in working with Black men or Black women?
Yes, many Black therapists have specific experience working with Black men or Black women. While therapists who work with Black clients broadly address concerns relevant to all genders, like anxiety or depression, those with a gender-specific focus are equipped to work with you on the particular ways that race and gender may intersect. For example, some therapists may specialize in working with Black women on topics like body image or maternal mental health, while other therapists may work with Black men on topics such as relationships or masculinity.

Do Black therapists offer marriage and couples counselling?
Yes, many Black therapists in Canada are trained in couples and marriage counselling and can work with partners navigating a wide range of relationship challenges. Therapists who identify as Black may have a better understanding of cultural dynamics surrounding marriage, family roles, or marital conflict and may better help you and your partner without making assumptions. For couples where one or both partners are of Black African or Black Caribbean heritage, working with a therapist who understands that cultural context can be particularly valuable.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with Black clients?
The initial consultation with a therapist, which is typically a phone call, is a good time to inquire about a therapist’s experience in working with Black clients. You can either ask directly (e.g., "Do you have experience working with Black clients?") or more broadly (e.g., "How do you approach cultural identity in your practice?"). You could also ask whether they have completed any training in cultural competence, and how they would handle a situation where a cultural misunderstanding arose in the therapeutic relationship. A therapist who is comfortable with these questions and responds thoughtfully is a good sign that they are equipped to work with you effectively.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?
The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who understands their cultural identity. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
