Are u looking for safe, accessible support with an Indigenous neurodivergent Therapist? I work with individuals from all walks of life but I specialize in helping neurodivergent individuals navigate the struggles that come with ADHD and Autism, such as masking and burnout. I also work with parents coping with the challenges that come with raising neurodivergent children. As an Indigenous woman I work thru an Indigenous lens, which means I use a holistic, strength based approach drawing upon multiple frameworks meant to empower folks to meet their own unique needs and feel comfortable being their true selves.

As the founder of Independence Counselling, I am a believer in the power of connection. In the power of supporting each other and in the power of allowing others to support us. Life can be hard. And telling someone that we are struggling can sometimes be harder. Staying hidden and silent won’t bring us the healing we long for. But reaching out, risking just might. I hope you take the risk and reach out. I’ll be right here.

Clients come to me when they (or their loved ones) are dealing with anxiety, depression, behavioural challenges, mood swings, challenging life events, flash backs, PTSD, or childhood trauma. I use Brainspotting, EMDR, Creative Arts therapy and other strength-based approaches to help clients build confidence, self-understanding, and concrete strategies to manage the challenges of daily life. My clients learn about the brain-body connection of their distress and challenges, building positive skills to be able to manage life’s stresses and become less overwhelmed by emotional triggers.

Think you might have ADHD or be autistic? Perhaps you saw a video online about it and thought “YES- that’s me!” Let’s talk about how it’s more than just difficulty focusing; it’s also poor time management, lack of organization, forgetfulness, and SO MUCH avoidance. It can look like being really productive for a few hours, and then sitting still for many hours. I specialize in working with people who are diagnosed as neurodivergent later in life and empower my clients to embrace themselves as they are. I also work with parents of neurodivergent children, as I understand that comes with so many specific challenges.

None of us deserve to face life feeling alone. You deserve a safe space where you can feel heard; a place to work through whatever comes your way; and a place to gain tools that you can use to live every day to the fullest. Perhaps you have a child who is learning to work through their emotions, or you are a young person having a hard time at school or at home. Maybe you are a parent looking to find ways to connect with your child(ren) differently than you are now or you're an adult who is about to go through a big life transition and want a listening ear.

At some point in our lives, we all feel overwhelmed, confused, stuck, or lost. These times can increase our stress and anxiety. In those times, we need understanding, validation, safety, and support to overcome our challenges. I aim to provide you with a safe place to share and process your current challenges. With a deeper understanding, we can then work together towards learning new skills and strategies that can help you move forward, build resilience, and better cope with any future obstacles.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
