I work with individuals on their journey of healing, growth, and wellness. Through a collaborative, holistic, and body-oriented approach, I support clients who are experiencing chronic stress and/or have faced overwhelming experiences at any point in their life. The result often includes symptoms of trauma, anxiety, depression, irritability, sleep impairments, digestion issues, chronic pain, grief, and relationship difficulties. My clients learn about the brain-body connection of their distress and challenges, and are supported with getting their 'body on board' with feeling better and engaging in life and relationships differently.

Trauma can affect our relationships and our sense of who we are, but we do not need to stay stuck in distress. Working to find a sense of meaning, reconnecting with the truth of our present moment, and untangling unhelpful narratives can help us reconnect with our authentic selves, making space for greater healing.

I am a Halifax-based counsellor, psychotherapist, and creative arts therapist with a background in mindfulness, body-based, and trauma-oriented modalities. I believe that to struggle is a fundamental part of human experience. As humans are relational beings, we need to be witnessed, supported and deeply heard in order to process and expand beyond our grief and our pain. We all have the innate capacity for healing. With the right space to hold and befriend our difficult memories and emotions, our minds and bodies learn that there can be safety, freedom, and possibility in our lives.

Take the step to starting therapy or even continuing with therapy can be difficult. It means unboxing a lot of the past that you have been holding on or realising changes need to be done which you may not be ready for. Maybe you are struggling with difficult emotions, overthinking, past trauma, life changes, relationship difficulties or doing more or less of certain things. A lot of times this also translates into difficulty connecting with others, trouble making decisions or just getting through the day.

I have substantial experience treating complex trauma.
One of the consequences of stress is re-experiencing it in the mind and body, leaving us depleted and disconnected from life. Intense reactions can be confusing and distressing. Making sense of our experiences, putting them in perspective, and changing unhelpful ways of thinking, behaving, and coping increases our resilience. I welcome individuals from all walks of life and have a particular interest in survivors of sexual violence and exploitation; first responders, frontline workers, military, veterans and their families; survivors of adverse childhood experiences; workplace stress and life transitions; and older adults.

My current areas of practice are 2SLGBTQ+, family of origin trauma, first responder trauma, depression, anxiety, religious trauma, relational trauma (CPTSD), late/ self-identified neurocomplexity/ neurodiversity.
When the injured psyche drives behaviour, it can isolate us from community and separate us from our own heart. Yet, when we heal our unconscious patterns and stay connected with our heart, we begin to evolve into the most loving and courageous version of ourselves. Our traumatic and injurious experiences hold lessons and opportunities for emotional, psychological and spiritual growth; as well as an opportunity to evolve beyond survival, to expand in consciousness into the wisdom of knowing ourselves and the power of mastering ourselves.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
