Hurts and traumas can affect our relationships with ourselves and others, but we do not need to stay stuck in distress. I support clients to find a sense of meaning and come into new relationship with their experiences, making space for greater healing.

Our minds and hearts have a natural inclination toward healing and wellbeing. But sometimes, those natural forces are blocked or stifled by unhelpful stories we have been told about ourselves, unjust social forces, isolation, trauma, or any number of other challenges. Together, our work will be to unblock those healing systems, and move toward healthier connections with friends, family, community, the natural world, and with yourself. In addition to being a therapist, I work as a theatre artist and post-secondary educator. This other side of my life infuses my sessions with humour and creativity.

Sometimes our problems seem to take on a life of their own; they can drag us down, even paralyzing us under a weight of sadness and worry. Perhaps you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or like you are struggling to cope. If this sounds like you, we can talk. With years of experience in clinical healthcare and university-counselling settings, I am adept at working with a wide range of mental health and life challenges, including anxiety, depression, and relational difficulties. I offer in-office, outdoor, virtual, and phone-based therapy sessions, through Wolf Counselling Therapy (WolfCT.ca).

When you become aware that your protective system is not letting you live the life you want to lead, therapy helps unburden the parts that keep you stuck. Through Internal Family Systems therapy you can get to know your inner system of protection, distraction and inner freedom. Protection may be anxiety, anger, depression and distraction may be numbing, dissociation, addiction and procrastination. You learn that some of your protection is based on what worked in childhood but is no longer serving you now. With couples I focus on learning to become relational through the work of Terry Real's Relational Life Therapy.

I work from the perspective that everyone has basic healthiness, a natural yearning for brilliant sanity and the wisdom of wholeness as part of their being. Conditioning and confusion can obscure these endowments but they are never absent. My job is to help draw out this wisdom for healing that is already there, by encouraging awareness. I begin with client-centered listening that honours where you are now, and the change you want. I then move into more experiential work to facilitate transformation. The contract for change and the pace of change is always in the client's hands

What has spared us from pain in the past often keeps us stuck and anxious in the present. Most of us wish to be free of our psychological suffering. Still, we find ourselves continuing to treat ourselves or others poorly in spite of our best interests. We all need a therapeutic relationship where we can learn to experience our emotions safely, regulate our anxiety, and turn against our defences. I provide Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), a comprehensive form of psychotherapy that helps patients experience their emotions and understand themselves across a broad range of clinical concerns.

Life can be overwhelming for all of us, no matter who you are. There are times when we all feel like we are drowning in mud – stuck, helpless, hopeless, and confused. Unfortunately, we become isolated and lonely because we believe that we “should” be able to deal with everything life throws at us, without any help. What can you expect from me? I will do my best to make you feel understood, safe, and supported. It is important for me to create a warm and nonjudgmental environment, in which we can work together to help you recognize and explore what is holding you back, so you can break free and move toward the life you want.

Hi there, I'm Tanya. I enjoy supporting youth to Millennials who are facing stress, anxiety, depression and ADHD, amongst a variety of other emotional difficulties. Life has been difficult, especially throughout these unprecedented times, and can result in troubles with worrying, focus and attention, low self-esteem, feelings of isolation, and overwhelming negative thoughts. It's not easy. The good news is that despite these difficulties, counselling can help turn the tide around; it offers a safe space to gain new insights, coping skills, and confidence to overcome challenges and start feeling better.

How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.
Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.
Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
