You may be dealing with anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, trauma, or long-standing stress and feeling stuck in patterns that keep repeating. Maybe life feels hard to manage right now, or maybe you are getting through the day but it takes everything you have. You may want a clearer understanding of what is happening and why, and practical help to change it. You want relief, steadier emotions, and to feel more like yourself again - able to sleep better, focus, and feel present with the people and responsibilities that matter to you.

I am the owner of Home Grown Occupational Therapy, and an Occupational Therapist working in neurodivergent mental health. I hold degrees from Dalhousie University, Carleton University and McMaster University. I am also neurodivergent myself, with a later-in-life diagnosis of ADHD. I find this to be a strength when working with other ND people. Many of my clients have diagnoses of (or are querying if they have) autism, ADHD and/or OCD. As a trauma-informed mental health OT, I believe we all need meaningful occupations, roles and activities to lead. Occupational Therapy helps us engage in those activities, regardless of barriers

At different points in life, it’s common to feel overwhelmed, confused, stuck, or unsure of how to move forward. These experiences can build over time, leaving you feeling disconnected from your usual sense of calm, clarity, or confidence. When life feels this way, having a space where your inner experience is met with genuine curiosity, understanding, and compassion, rather than pressure or judgment, can help you make sense of what’s happening inside, build resilience, move foward and better cope with future obstacles.

I provide holistic psychotherapy and wellness counselling to individuals and couples (18 y/o and up). I recognize that working through difficult life circumstances and/or challenging relationships can be stressful and isolating, resulting in feelings of anxiety, low mood, poor coping skills or a general sense of being stuck in a cycle of unhealthy patterns. To move forward, it’s important to honour our lived experiences, accept that deeper emotions are appropriate in certain situations and build trust in ourselves to know the difference.

You’re stuck in patterns you can’t seem to change. Maybe you're feeling anxious, disconnected, or overwhelmed by the demands of life or your relationship. You’re trying to keep it together, but inside, something feels off - misaligned. Conversations turn into conflicts. Emotions feel too big or numb. You’re caught between wanting things to change and not knowing how to begin. Maybe you’ve done therapy before or this is your first time. Either way, you’re craving clarity, connection, and something more sustainable than “just coping.” You’re ready for real change, not quick fixes.

From time to time, we all face challenges that can be overwhelming. Sometimes these challenges are situational, but they can also be the result of our lived experience(s) over time. Often they manifest as anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and self harm. These manifestations can lead to further challenges such as job loss, family conflict, isolation, and addiction. Although we may flounder or experience failure, we can develop the strategies needed to live a flourishing life. Integrative therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Positive Psychotherapy, and Solution Focused Therapy teach us how to live well.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
