Getting through this thing called life can be difficult for anyone. At times, it feels like there's nowhere for us to slow down and sort through the noise of the day. A moment to breathe, and just maybe, let our shoulders drop, as we find our way back into our body. Maybe you're in need of that kind of space. I am a white, cisgender, queer man, and social worker. I work from a relational and anti-oppressive perspective that is influenced by my own life experiences and my years of working with clients.

Finding the right psychologist, someone you can create a meaningful working relationship with, is essential to therapy. I hope to make you feel welcome and supported while exploring challenging areas in your life to find real solutions. Everyone has the potential to live a happy, healthy life. Support from a psychologist can be the missing step toward improving mental health and meeting personal goals. I approach therapy with optimism, understanding that while difficulties and setbacks are inevitable, with the right support, everyone can develop the skills needed to navigate challenges and achieve a more fulfilling life.

With the right approach, we can retrain your mind, reshape your emotional responses, and build healthier ways of relating to yourself and others.

I believe everyone is capable of change. My journeys from adolescence to adult, child to caregiver, independent to partner/parent and career planning to career surviving has validated my awareness that we all struggle even with the best intentions. We all have missteps. The good news is some of our missteps can be our greatest opportunity for growth.
I have dedicated myself to professionally helping others in times of crisis for nearly 20 years. If I have the privilege to work with you in whatever area you desire to become the best version of yourself I commit to you it will be done in a safe, supportive judgement-free approach.

I am now accepting new clients. ...Each of us has a story we want to be true. What kind of partner/parent/friend do I want to be? What is the work I want to do in the world? What do I want to make more central, and where do I want to learn to let go? How do I navigate this next step? If we're working together, then we’re exploring what matters most to you and how to work with the obstacles that keep you from it. And if you're coming as a couple, then we're working on how to have the kinds of conversations that currently feel out of reach.

I draw on the commonalities that exist between counselling approaches, and am aligned with anti-oppression perspectives. Through a combination of deeply introspective, pragmatic, and somatic practices, I help clients find greater self-compassion, security in their relationships, and grow towards deeper purpose and fulfillment in their lives. I'm a good fit for working through issues related to queerness, addiction, loss, shame, or physical health. If you have little or no coverage, please don't hesitate to inquire about my sliding scale.

Hi, my name is Steve Gates and I have been working in mental health for 17 years with 9 years working as a counsellor with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. In my work, I try to blend my training with your expertise about you. Using this approach, I have seen people make progress through situations that truly seemed impossible. In my experience, once people accept where they are and make realistic goals, they tend to make progress. The “feel better” part does seem to take time, but it tends to follow the changes.

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
