I offer therapy to people who are struggling to move forward and feeling stuck in some way. You may be feeling disconnected, carrying negative perceptions of yourself, or feeling a general sense of not living the life you want to live and wanting change. I provide a space for you to be seen and known. I want to find what is holding you back. I often work with people through challenges in relationships, in living more authentically, and in building a more secure sense of self. Together we look at the ways you protect yourself and whether these ways are still serving you.

We offer therapy online or in-person, weekdays and evenings.
You’re stuck in patterns you can’t seem to change. Maybe you're feeling anxious, disconnected, or overwhelmed by the demands of life or your relationship. You’re trying to keep it together, but inside, something feels off - misaligned. Conversations turn into conflicts. Emotions feel too big or numb. You’re caught between wanting things to change and not knowing how to begin. Maybe you’ve done therapy before or this is your first time. Either way, you’re craving clarity, connection, and something more sustainable than “just coping.” You’re ready for real change, not quick fixes.

Do you feel stuck or lost in your career? Want to weigh your options or get ahead/change jobs? Despite societal pressure to know exactly what you "should" do, many adults still struggle with this big life question. I want to help you better understand where you've come from and how you hope to experience your future. There’s no set path, no instructional manual or timeline telling you what to do next. That kind of freedom can be overwhelming or paralyzing. But you don’t have to navigate it alone. I'll help you feel clear about your purpose, what you want & ultimately be guided by your values, interests, abilities & life experience.

I offer sessions in-person, over the phone, or online via video.
Have you ever felt lost or overwhelmed, especially in your relationship with yourself or others, but couldn’t quite understand why? Often, the patterns that leave us feeling unhappy or disconnected are rooted in unhealed trauma that hasn’t been fully processed or addressed. I take a holistic and non-pathologizing approach that focuses on uncovering the root causes of your distress. I believe that anxiety, depression, and other common diagnoses are not indications that something is “wrong” with you. Instead, they are often wise, protective responses from a body and nervous system that have experienced stress or threat.

Healing from trauma isn't about "fixing" something that's broken within you; it's a profound unravelling of rediscovering and embracing the parts of yourself that have remained hidden in the shadows of fear and chaos. It's about dismantling destructive patterns created out of survival so that you can reconnect and come home to your authentic SELF. It's about learning to live with a full range of experiences and emotions and feeling as though you are capable, worthy, and enough.

Hi, my name is Steve Gates and I have been working in mental health for 17 years with 9 years working as a counsellor with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. In my work, I try to blend my training with your expertise about you. Using this approach, I have seen people make progress through situations that truly seemed impossible. In my experience, once people accept where they are and make realistic goals, they tend to make progress. The “feel better” part does seem to take time, but it tends to follow the changes.

I offer in-person sessions in Halifax and Dartmouth, as well as virtual sessions for individuals across Canada!
Hi, I’m Elizabeth, and I support teens, adults, first responders and veterans as they navigate trauma, grief, anxiety, life transitions, relationships, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and more. I welcome individuals from all walks of life, with a particular passion for working with survivors of narcissistic abuse and adverse childhood experiences. Trauma lives in both the mind and body, shaping how you see yourself and the world around you. Therapy offers a safe space to begin untangling those patterns and can help you move beyond the weight of the past—opening the door to a life with more ease, clarity, and harmony.

I am best able to help clients who are desirous of making changes in their lives and understand that "the slower you go, the faster you get there". My practice provides a safe space for patients to put all of their thoughts and feelings into words. As patients talk, they learn about themselves and better understand their journey. As the unconscious becomes conscious, patients are able to make more thoughtful and meaningful choices and thus begin to live more full and meaningful lives.

There are times in life when we need to tell our story and have it received within a context of trust. I work with individuals navigating life-transitions that are part and parcel of being human, but that may temporarily separate them from a sense of wholeness and thriving: particularly when facing loss, illness, crisis, or events that shatter our sense of self. Within the therapeutic context, my goal is to build a relationship with my clients that facilitates trust, self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and a renewed sense of hope.

FAQ - About In Person Therapy
What are the benefits of in-person therapy?
In-person therapy offers several benefits that some people find highly valuable for their mental health treatment. Being present in the same room as your therapist can create a stronger sense of connection and allow for more nuanced communication through body language. Some people may also find it easier to focus in therapy when they are in a dedicated space and away from potential distractions related to home or work; attending an in-person session provides a clear boundary between therapy time and the rest of your life. For certain therapeutic approaches, such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy, or somatic therapy, being in person may be particularly important, as these therapies benefit from the therapist being able to observe and respond to a client’s physical cues effectively. Additionally, some individuals simply feel more comfortable discussing sensitive or painful topics when they are face-to-face with their therapist rather than on a screen.

When should I choose in-person therapy over online therapy?
In-person therapy may be a better choice when you need a structured therapeutic environment separate from your daily life, when you find it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in an online setting, or when privacy at home is a concern. It may also be more appropriate if you are dealing with severe mental health symptoms that require close monitoring or if your therapy involves approaches that rely heavily on observing physical cues. On the other hand, if convenience, scheduling flexibility, or access to specialists outside your immediate area are priorities, online therapy may be a better fit. Many therapists offer both options, so you can also discuss with a provider which format might work best for your specific situation.

How do I find an in-person therapist?
You can use Psychology Today's therapist directory to find an in-person therapist in your area. You can search by location, insurance accepted, specialty areas, therapeutic approaches, and other criteria to narrow down providers who meet your needs. Each therapist profile includes information about their credentials, areas of expertise, and whether they offer in-person sessions. Once you have identified potential therapists, you can contact them directly through the directory to schedule an initial consultation and determine whether they are a good fit before committing to ongoing treatment. When reaching out, it can be helpful to confirm their availability for in-person appointments, their office location, and whether they accept your insurance.
