Grief Therapists in Halifax, NS

Life can be challenging and sometimes it can be hard to know the steps we need to take to better understand ourselves and live the life we want to live. I work from the perspective that being a human is hard and that we all face struggles throughout our life. While these challenges may be unavoidable, therapy can provide a place to feel seen and help shift your perspective, discover more about yourself, connect with your feelings, and discover meaning from your experiences.

Do you struggle with feelings of never being good enough? Are you living under the shadow of an inner critic that questions or shames your every move? Maybe a recent (or suspected) ADHD diagnosis has thrown life for a loop. When life is overwhelming, it can be hard to find the time or space to recover – or even figure out what recovery looks like. You don’t have to go it alone. I focus on helping those struggling with anxiety, shame, and the impacts of ADHD on well-being. In our work together, we can explore how to calm the internal storm, reconnect with your authentic self, and maybe even find joy again.

You are the expert in your own life - I am here to help facilitate your exploration. Our minds and hearts have a natural inclination toward healing and wellbeing. But sometimes, those natural forces are blocked or stifled by unhelpful stories we have been told about ourselves, unjust social forces, isolation, trauma, or any number of other challenges. Together, our work will be to unblock those healing systems, and move toward healthier connections with friends, family, community, the natural world, and with yourself. In addition to being a therapist, I work as a theatre artist and post-secondary educator. This other side of my life infuses my sessions with humour and creativity.

When we face challenges, we tend to resort to old patterns to cope. While these patterns may have been helpful in the past, they often cause us more suffering in the present by distracting us from what really matters about ourselves, our emotions, and our relationships. This can result in a variety of mental health concerns as well as difficulties in our lives and relationships.
To help re-establish our connection to what’s important and break out of these negative cycles, we often need a "gentle-but-firm" therapeutic relationship where we can focus on the feelings and needs we’ve been neglecting.

I strive to provide a safe and creative space for people to gain a deeper self-understanding and develop tools for navigating life's challenges. As a registered counselling therapist (candidate) and accredited music therapist, my speciality lies in integrating the creative processes (music, visual art, creative writing) in therapy as tools for self-expression, reflection, empowerment, and growth. I see each person as an innately and uniquely creative person capable of using this creativity as a resource in their therapy. Sessions with me typically integrate elements of talk therapy, music therapy, and mindfulness-based practices.

I work from the perspective that everyone has basic healthiness, a natural yearning for brilliant sanity and the wisdom of wholeness as part of their being. Conditioning and confusion can obscure these endowments but they are never absent. My job is to help draw out this wisdom for healing that is already there, by encouraging awareness. I begin with client-centered listening that honours where you are now, and the change you want. I then move into more experiential work to facilitate transformation. The contract for change and the pace of change is always in the client's hands

I provide holistic psychotherapy and wellness counselling to individuals and couples (18 y/o and up). I recognize that working through difficult life circumstances and/or challenging relationships can be stressful and isolating, resulting in feelings of anxiety, low mood, poor coping skills or a general sense of being stuck in a cycle of unhealthy patterns. To move forward, it’s important to honour our lived experiences, accept that deeper emotions are appropriate in certain situations and build trust in ourselves to know the difference.

I consider myself to be an eclectic practitioner. I employ many different therapeutic approaches including: Narrative, CBT, Solution Focused, Trauma Informed therapies, Mindfulness practices, ACT and Behavioural Modification strategies. I tend to work primarily from a Narrative Therapy approach, which is an approach to counselling that seeks to be respectful and non-blaming. It centres the client as the expert in their own lives and views problems as separate from the client themselves. Narrative Therapists assume clients have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them in reducing the influence of problems in their own lives.

I am best able to help clients who are desirous of making changes in their lives and understand that "the slower you go, the faster you get there". My practice provides a safe space for patients to put all of their thoughts and feelings into words. As patients talk, they learn about themselves and better understand their journey. As the unconscious becomes conscious, patients are able to make more thoughtful and meaningful choices and thus begin to live more full and meaningful lives.

When we are experiencing a stressful life event, a challenging medical diagnosis or chronic condition, or just facing a difficult period of our life, it is not uncommon that we may feel overwhelmed with new changes, unsettled thoughts and emotions, and need someone to talk to. Both individuals and caregivers may feel stressed and uncertain about the future. As we encounter life's difficulties, we all may need help coping at some point in our life. I am committed to helping my clients ease their distress, and find a healthy sense of well-being and more helpful and bonding connections in their relationships.
