When you become aware that your protective system is not letting you live the life you want to lead, therapy helps unburden the parts that keep you stuck. Through Internal Family Systems therapy you can get to know your inner system of protection, distraction and inner freedom. Protection may be anxiety, anger, depression and distraction may be numbing, dissociation, addiction and procrastination. You learn that some of your protection is based on what worked in childhood but is no longer serving you now. With couples I focus on learning to become relational through the work of Terry Real's Relational Life Therapy.

Practicing from an ecological stance, I recognize that individuals exist within larger systems which can significantly impact their well-being. It's important for me to understand all aspects of a client's life beyond their presenting symptoms to form a well-rounded picture of the contributing factors in their mental health experiences. I primarily work with adolescent and adult clients for individual, couple and family therapy. I am specifically interested in working with romantic relationship conflict, trauma (acute and complex), transgender health, life transition stress, anxiety, and emotional disturbances.

I am trained in the following treatments: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for Trauma, Prolonged Exposure (PE) for Trauma, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for depression, anxiety and psychosis.
Hi, my name is Steve Gates and I have been working in mental health for 15 years with 7 years working as a counsellor with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. In my work, I try to blend my training with your expertise about you. Using this approach, I have seen people make progress through situations that truly seemed impossible. In my experience, once people accept where they are and make realistic goals, they tend to make progress. The “feel better” part does seem to take time, but it tends to follow the changes.

We will explore how your past experiences—childhood, family, cultural backgrounds, and identities, shape how you think, feel, and behave.
Do you often find yourself worrying a lot and it's hard to feel relaxed? Do you feel exhausted from taking care of other people and feel like your needs and feelings are often ignored? You may be tough on yourself, always thinking you're not good enough. Most days, you may feel like you're just getting by, not really living. You might not even remember a time when you were genuinely happy, but you know you want to start feeling better again. Welcome! I’m Dr. Yue. I’m a bilingual (Chinese and English) psychologist who helps people heal from self-doubt, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, immigrant stress, and other life challenges.

I address a wide range of problems including: stress & anxiety; depression; unresolved anger; forgiveness; grief; bitterness; low self-esteem; identity crisis; conflict; family issues; marriage conflicts; crisis intervention.
My approach is to allow you to bring your past into the present so that you can develop skills that free you to thrive in the future. I provide a safe, open and encouraging space to equip and free you to do three things: * identify automatic negative, limiting or unproductive thoughts and behaviours, and imagine a life beyond them; * move from the bondage of those thoughts and behaviours, into a freedom of intention and choice where you can live life with purpose and passion; * develop the skill to sustain this freedom on your own.

My areas of speciality include adolescence, life transitions, parenting, the military family experience, and grief.
Difficult times call for broadening our support systems and finding new pathways to wellbeing. As a long-time practitioner of meditation, I employ presence-based strategies helping you connect with self-compassion, bravery and calm. In practice, we explore any habits that are causing difficulty, while also addressing ingrained beliefs and emotions that are contributing to these patterns. You set the pace for the counselling process and we walk through the process together. Using a combination of Narrative, Mindfulness, Emotionally-Focused, and Cognitive Behavioural approaches, I support enhanced resiliency and practical change.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
