I support individuals and families across the lifespan using person-centered, narrative, existential, somatic, and mindfulness-based therapies, along with EMDR and trauma-informed care.
My services focus on teens, young adults, or families struggling with emotional overwhelm, disconnection, self-harm, or suicide ideation. They often feel isolated, misunderstood, or stuck in painful patterns—longing for relief, clarity, and stronger relationships. Their goals may include managing intense emotions, healing from past trauma, repairing family bonds, or simply feeling more like themselves again. Deep down, they want to be seen, supported, and to know that change is possible—even when it feels out of reach.

My practice is informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS), Trauma-Focused Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (TF-ACT), attachment theory and somatic mindfulness.
Welcome! I am a Clinical Social Worker offering individual therapy to adults seeking support in healing their relationship to Self, attachment wounds, and relational traumas. You might be in an anxious-avoidant dance, noticing painful relationship patterns, feeling stuck in a loop of relational ambivalence, or want to resolve what's blocking deeper connections. You might be navigating difficult family relationships and questioning estrangement and boundaries. Perhaps you are noticing a harsh inner-critic, self-doubt, the urge to people please, or a disconnection from Self (the person you are and want to be; at your core).

I will integrate specialized interventions as appropriate, such as mindfulness and somatic exercises, to meet your unique needs and therapeutic goals.
Hi! I'm Amy. I offer sex-positive, trauma-informed counselling to help you explore your desires and transform your sex life. I specialize in sex therapy, and work with clients in both BC and NS. I started my practice to help others increase authenticity, playfulness, and connection within their intimate relationships. I've helped hundreds of clients cultivate pleasure and nurture their erotic energy by examining and challenging the unhelpful beliefs and social messages that prevent them from embracing their desires. Together, we will co-create a relaxed, open space to honestly explore your questions, needs, and wants.

While my treatment approach will be tailored to meet your needs, I frequently draw from several modalities, such as Person-Centered Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Somatic Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Therapy.
Beginning therapy for the first time or starting with a new therapist can be a daunting experience; therefore, my aim is to create a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment that allows you to show up as your most authentic self and grow at your own pace. My greatest priority is ensuring you feel heard, understood, and respected within our therapeutic relationship as I know being vulnerable and trusting someone with our deepest thoughts, feelings, and traumas can be extremely challenging. In our work together, we will collaboratively explore your current situation, concerns, and goals to help you plan a new way forward.

I offer a safe, nurturing space where I blend Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic trauma healing, mindfulness, and narrative-based therapy with coaching-style accountability.
Do you feel like you’ve lost yourself under the weight of responsibilities? You hold it all together — family, work, relationships — but inside, you’re running on empty. Maybe you're navigating the complexities of 'adulting' or transitioning through mid-life, facing cycles of overthinking, self-doubt, or people-pleasing that keep you disconnected and unsure about how to break free from these patterns. I specialize in helping clients reconnect with their true selves, release old patterns of anxiety, self-sacrifice, and emotional overwhelm, creating healthier relationships with themselves and others.

somatic work involving the body language.
1. Question: how can we tell someone we care about they are making us mad? 2. Most people want to feel in control of their lives, that they can progress further towards their goals. Most people want supportive human connections and respect and joy. I am sensitive to the human need of attachment and authenticity, meaning we all need human connections and want to be accepted as ourselves. Sometimes we don't even know who we want to be or who we are really. My work helps bring out these crucial needs to the surface. And then the pathway to meet these needs becomes clear, individual path, everyone's unique. Relationships are crucial.

Through the integration of EMDR, Somatic therapy and other evidence-based psychological modalities, I guide clients on a transformative journey.
When was the last time you experienced harmony with your core principles? At Hartwell Counselling, I provide a compassionate and transformative therapy rooted in evidence-based practices such as EMDR. EMDR which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and its the gold standard for treating and processing trauma. EMDR reduces trauma symptoms in a shorter time frame than the traditional talk therapy. Many clients have reported a reduction of traumatic symptoms after the initial few sessions of EMDR. EMDR is not a magic cure for trauma but it might produce some symptoms relief.

This can look like increasing awareness of emotions and body sensations, creative visualization, working with nature and the land, expressive arts, breathing, movement, grief processing, somatic therapy, generative somatics and storytelling.
I believe in our individual and collective capacity to heal and transform, and that we do not need to walk that path alone. I often work with people who are searching for a way back to safety, dignity and belonging in their relationships. I work at the edge of healing trauma and social justice with a belief that our pathways to healing are not just individual, but are shaped by cultural context. As a queer practitioner with lived experience, I am deeply aware of how legacies of trauma and oppression shape our pathways to connection. I am committed to prioritizing your agency and collaboration in our work together.

I also integrate elements from Internal Family Systems (IFS), Polyvagal Theory, Somatic Techniques, and the Gottman Method and PACT Model for couples.
Have you ever felt lost or overwhelmed, especially in your relationship with yourself or others, but couldn’t quite understand why? Often, the patterns that leave us feeling unhappy or disconnected are rooted in unhealed trauma that hasn’t been fully processed or addressed. I take a holistic and non-pathologizing approach that focuses on uncovering the root causes of your distress. I believe that anxiety, depression, and other common diagnoses are not indications that something is “wrong” with you. Instead, they are often wise, protective responses from a body and nervous system that have experienced stress or threat.

Waitlist for new clients
I work with close attention to the impact emotions have on the body's physiology; and I am trained in Somatic Experience to treat trauma as developed by Peter Levine PhD.
I have a wait list for new clients. Online appointments are available on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings. My approach to therapy is rooted in the view that people have an inherent capacity for healthiness. I will work with you to uncover that wellbeing again so that you can live the life you deserve with more vitality and authenticity whether you suffer from chronic illness, the burden of a traumatic injury or complex trauma, a diagnosis of PTSD, anxiety, depression, unprocessed grief, or the malaise that comes from being over-stressed and not coping as well as you'd like.

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
