I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) who aims to create safe spaces for people to navigate their struggles, stressors, and healing journeys. My approach to counselling is grounded in mindfulness -based therapy, which gives people the tools they need to become more aware of their present moment thoughts and feelings and helps identify how they may impact overall well-being. I operate from an anti-oppressive and trauma-informed lens. While working together, I hope that my clients feel heard, supported, and empowered to achieve their goals. I am an Accredited Mindfulness Teacher and a member of the Academy of Naturopaths and Naturotherapists holding a Master of Science in Mindfulness -Based Interventions from University College Dublin.
Have you ever driven home from work and ended up in the drive way with no idea how you got there? Thinking the same thoughts over and over and not been able to get to sleep? Reacted by saying things you wish you hadn’t? Yep, we’ve all been there. Through learning evidence-based mindfulness exercises, my clients learn how to re-wire their brains, change their inner dialogue, and create more space in their lives. Mindfulness training can be therapeutic, however it differs from therapy; we learn how to let go of our usual thinking, story-telling, and analyzing modes by exploring what is actually here right now.

Asking for help can be one of the hardest things to do - I’m glad you are making that first step! My therapy room is a safe and accepting space where there is no agenda to change or "cure" you. It is to see you, as you are. My goal is that you feel seen and understood. Many clients come to me describing themselves as depressed, overwhelmed, stressed, stuck or anxious. Most are surprised that I don't try to ’get rid' of these symptoms, but that every part is welcome and has an important story to share. Through mindfulness we bring awareness to these feelings, to understand and embrace them to enable healing at a deeper level.

I practice from a perspective grounded in Self-Compassion, Radical Acceptance and Mindfulness based techniques.
Loss and change can leave us feeling like the rug has been pulled out from under us; our foundation feels shaky and things seem like they will never be the same (including you). When you lose someone you love through death or a relationship change, the loss is felt deeply. Other life transitions can leave you grieving and struggling in much the same way. Navigating loss and change is easier said than done, but with the right support, it's possible.

I take a holistic, biopsychosocial approach to all clients, as what brings us to therapy exists within all aspects of our lives. I use theoretical approaches such as client-centered, attachment-based, emotionally focused therapy (EFT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and solution-focused therapies, as well as components of mindfulness . I primarily work with couples and individuals as they navigate distress in their lives and relationships such as transitions, infidelity, pregnancy, and parenting. You will be met with warmth, comfort, and understanding in our sessions.

Blending gentle, compassionate and non-judgemental support with evidence-based skills (CBT, DBT, MBCT, Mindfulness Practice and EMDR) has enabled me to build strong relationships and work effectively with numerous clients (in a variety of professional contexts) over the years.
With over 20 years of experience working with individuals and groups, I am passionate and experienced in building strong, nurturing relationships with my clients as we sort through life's challenges together. Particular areas of interest and expertise include stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, women’s issues, relationship issues, life transitions and personal growth. While some clients prefer short-term, highly structured sessions, others prefer a more longstanding, fluid relationship to support them through life's ups and downs. I am open to discussing all options and believe that flexibility and a sense of humour go a long way!

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
