I know that reaching out for support can feel overwhelming and i'm so glad that you're here. I work with children, teens, young adults and adults. With adults, I work to explore new ways to cope with old patterns that are no longer serving them. I also work with folks to help them understand and process the stories and emotional experiences that have left them feeling stuck. This allows choice for people to move toward a life that is deeply connected to their values. My work with children (5-10), teens and families is focused on trauma, anxiety and depression and is informed by my advanced trainings in Play Therapy, ACT and EFFT.

Practicing from an ecological stance, I recognize that individuals exist within larger systems which can significantly impact physical and emotional well-being. It's important for me to understand all aspects of a client's life beyond their symptoms to form a well-rounded picture of the contributing factors in their mental health experiences. I primarily work with adolescent and adult clients for individual and
family therapy
. I am specifically interested in working with trauma (acute and complex), transgender health, life transition stress, anxiety, emotional disturbances and relationship difficulties.

Are you struggling in this crazy world? Do you feel anxious, sad, frustrated, angry, overwhelmed, and/or tired of it all? Do you feel lost and alone, that no one understands you, that you are fighting your struggles alone? Is it difficult to muster the motivation and energy to do things that you once enjoyed? Are you constantly embroiled in conflict with others? Do you wish things were better, that you felt better, that the pain, sadness, and conflict would go away and be replaced with happiness, peace, contentment, and joy?

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with more than ten years of experience supporting individuals with their mental wellness. I believe that clients are the experts of their own lives and at times become stuck with internal conflict, ways of being, or are in situations that are not conducive to growth. I believe that everyone is on their own spiritual journey and that for some, participating in therapy can encourage deeper understanding and help to unearth meaning in their life. I enjoy helping clients work to identify the source of thoughts, feelings and concerns with the goal of arriving at a place of understanding and acceptance.

Teresa is an empathic, kind, and nonjudgmental counsellor who is passionate about helping individuals overcome their struggles with mental health, and cultivate the self-compassion needed to heal from past traumas. Feelings of stress and anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction, and relationship difficulties have feelings of shame and self-criticism at their core. Directing compassion toward ourselves can allow us to feel safe and accepted, giving us the caring motivation to work through our suffering, to change unhelpful thinking/behaviour patterns, and connect with our values to get the most out of life.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
