Looking for a safe space to talk it out? Want to process experiences, manage problem? Just need someone to listen? Feeling the feelings is hard. Building self-esteem and confidence can feel impossible. Not sleeping, anxiety, stress, and eating too little or too much are all issues that challenge us. A safe and welcoming environment for all. Learning how to shift perspective and process traumatic life events. All these things show up, and we each feel them differently. Wanting to be your best self is a good life goal! Everyone is welcome. No judgement.

My main focus is on relationship development with adolescents (families), self-injury behavior in youth, and anxiety reduction strategies. I am also an ally for the LGBT2Q+ community. I have recently dedicated time studying issues and strategies surrounding self-injury behavior in youth, grief counselling, e-therapy counselling, and trauma informed practices.

Hello, everyone! My name is Emily Penney. I am currently a student counsellor under the supervision of Dr. Laurie Ponsford-Hill at The Counselling House in Woodstock, Ontario. I believe in a biopsychosocial approach to counselling by which mind-body wellness is achieved by creating harmony between an individual’s social environment, personal thoughts and values, and biological make-up. As every individual is unique, so too should be their plan of treatment. Using an eclectic and integrative approach, I will draw upon a variety of theories and techniques to tailor a treatment plan specific to your individual needs.

There are so many experiences in life that can make us lose touch with ourselves. a relationship breakdown, a traumatic experience or just feeling like you've been going through the motions of life. You may feel like parts of yourself have changed, or maybe even parts that seem to be holding you back from healing. Maybe you have a harsh inner critic now, or you find yourself feeling angry and guarded, therapy can help heal those parts and reconnect you with your authentic self. I understand how vulnerable this process can feel, please admire your strength for being here.

With over 20 years in the helping profession, I have spent my career working with individuals and couples looking to experience a positive change in their lives. I have been employed in many diverse settings helping to support people of all ages and backgrounds identify and reach their ideals. Although I am experienced in many theories and interventions, I tend to work from a person centred approach which allows individual and couples to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their own solutions in their journey of self-discovery.

It can be very difficult to find a therapist who you might feel can be helpful to you. I like to think of therapy as first and most importantly a relationship. Some might have a sense that things are not as they might hope. We live in a time of loneliness, confusion, separation, conflict and it seems our cultural framework that is meant to hold all of this together is failing. At the heart of what is missing for so many is a place of love and belonging. Or perhaps you’ve lost sight of a sense of meaning in your life? Maybe you’ve received recently some deeply troubling news about your own health or the recent loss of a loved one?

How can I find a therapist in Gander?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
