Whether you are a paramedic, police officer, firefighter, or professional, occupational trauma and burnout accumulate the same way.
For first responders, EMDR resolves critical incident trauma without requiring you to verbally reprocess every event. For professionals with burnout, it addresses the root cause not just the symptoms. We use EMDR, IFS, and somatic approaches methods that shift the problem, not just talk about it.

I am trauma-informed and work from a strength’s-based perspective to help folks manage life transitions, grief, relationship issues, anxiety, and depression.
Now offering EMDR! Hi, my name is Sara; welcome to 617 Counselling. Let's talk about the elephant in the room. You have a plan for your life and suddenly, circumstances beyond your control means that plan has to change. Reaching out to others can be hard. Family and friends love you, but may not have the outside perspective you are looking for. I know what it is like to find yourself in a situation you never expected. It is scary trying to figure out how to navigate the obstacles. I work with individuals aged 16+ to help them make positive changes to live their best lives.

As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional – Level 2 (CCTP-II), I strive to create a safe environment where you can explore your experiences and be your authentic self.
Do you remember when you were learning how to ride a bike? Undoubtedly, the process of learning was through trial, error, and perhaps guidance from a caregiver. It’s a common misconception that a therapist’s role is to simply give advice. That is not the case. My role in our therapeutic relationship is to guide you through the process – just like learning to ride a bike for the first time. It takes effort, time, and perhaps some discomfort…But the “aha” moment of finding balance brings a sense of freedom and independence.

I work with adults carrying the heavy weight of complex trauma, occupational stress, or the exhaustion of navigating a neurodivergent (ADHD/2e) mind in a neurotypical world.
My clinical focus is trauma and neurodivergence. I utilize advanced tools like Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to safely process past pain. For ADHD/2e clients, I use strengths-based, solution-focused strategies to learn your brain's unique "operating system" and build practical daily routines.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
