My name is Sydney McKenzie-Hougestol (she/her) and I am a Registered Psychologist. I chose to go into this field because I love people and I believe in people. I have worked with people in the field of mental health, addictions, and trauma for 8 years. I think often the key to unlocking what is going on for a person is looking into the ways they have learned to judge themselves for what they feel and think and challenging those assumptions. I am passionate about working with people and empowering them find new ways of looking at themselves, their relationships, and the world.

You're always someone worth caring for - can't stress that one enough. Therapy is an invitation to explore your relationships with others, with yourself; to find safety and meaning, in whatever that looks like. For some folks, that means negotiating the things that used to work but no longer do, for others that might be truly feeling like they can feel safe with themselves.

Are you tired of cycling through coping skills just to get through the day and want to understand what’s underneath? You may be seeking support for a recent or ongoing traumatic experience, a safe space to explore your childhood, or help in understanding and changing harmful behaviours. Perhaps you’re a man wanting to talk about issues that don’t always feel easy to name. I support clients in working through difficult emotions, gaining insight into past experiences, rebuilding a sense of safety and self-identity, and using coping strategies that actually fit. When appropriate, EMDR can be used to target specific traumatic memories.

Mental wellness is a process that requires ongoing attention and care. It is not a fixed destination that you reach and then forget about. As human beings, we have a universal need for recognition, empathy, love and dignity. I believe that these needs can be met through a supportive and compassionate relationship that fosters personal growth and healing. My goal is to offer a safe space for people who are willing to make positive changes in their lives and improve their mental well-being.

Many of the people who reach out to our clinic are used to holding a great deal on their own for a long time. From the outside, they may appear to be coping, managing responsibilities, caring for others, or functioning day-to-day while internally feeling overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally exhausted, disconnected, or stuck in painful patterns they can’t seem to shift. We understand how difficult it can feel to finally reach out for support. Whether you're new to therapy or returning to counselling, our team works collaboratively, not just for you but with you, to help find the best fit for your particular needs.

What’s the most effective treatment for psychosis?
The most effective treatment for psychosis is coordinated specialty care. In this model, a team of professionals works with a patient to address all aspects of the underlying disorder. This approach incorporates individual or group therapy, employment and education support, family support and education, medication management (which often involves low doses of antipsychotics), and case management to facilitate problem-solving as needed.

When should people seek treatment for psychosis?
People should seek immediate treatment at the earliest indication of psychosis. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized or blocked speech, and agitated body movements. Early signs that a person may be developing a disorder that will lead to psychosis include suspiciousness of others, memory problems and distractibility, an inability to think clearly, rapid or nonsensical speech, withdrawal from friends or family, aggression toward others, and sensitivity to bright lights or noises.

What if psychosis is left untreated?
Without treatment, psychosis can have significant repercussions, including injuries, job loss, homelessness, financial or legal trouble, ruptured relationships, and suffering for the person and their family. While early treatment for psychosis often yields the best results, there is no point past which it becomes useless to seek treatment. At any point, treatment can make a difference.

How do I get someone else to seek treatment for psychosis?
It’s extremely difficult to watch a loved one suffer from hallucinations, delusions, and other elements of psychosis—sometimes exacerbated by their fears of treatment. Have a conversation with them in a quiet space and maintain a calm, supportive tone. Share your concerns about behaviors you’ve observed, suggest treatment, and explain the potential benefits. Listen carefully to their responses. The person may not be ready after one conversation, but with time, they may come around.
