The most crucial part of successful healing in therapy, is your relationship with your therapist. I hope to provide a safe, calming space without judgement. Here, I accept all of you, both the parts of you that are loved and the parts that are unloved. Telling anyone about your experiences is hard and often we hold back to protect ourselves and/or those around us. Sometime we can't really pinpoint why we feel stuck. Sometimes we become so skilled at shutting down our pain that we start to see it leak out in other ways, like panic attacks and body pain. I am here to listen and help guide you towards a healthier and happier self.

My approach is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and a belief that healing is not about becoming someone new, but remembering who you are beneath the noise. I tune into what lies beneath the story. My training in energy work and spiritual sensibility allow me to notice the subtle shifts in body language, tone, even silence - creating opportunity to respond in ways that foster deep safety and attunement. My practice is neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed, and human-first. I know what it’s like to live in a world that often misunderstands sensitivity, intuition, or intensity and how healing it can be to finally feel seen.

As a second generation immigrant and member of the queer community, I strive to create a space that is inclusive, affirming, and responsive to the diverse identities and experiences my clients bring. With each client, my goal is to foster a space where they feel accepted, seen, and heard. I know therapy can feel overwhelming at first, so I aim to make the experience as comfortable and reassuring as I can.

Now offering EMDR! Hi, my name is Sara; welcome to 617 Counselling. Let's talk about the elephant in the room. You have a plan for your life and suddenly, circumstances beyond your control means that plan has to change. Reaching out to others can be hard. Family and friends love you, but may not have the outside perspective you are looking for. I know what it is like to find yourself in a situation you never expected. It is scary trying to figure out how to navigate the obstacles. I work with individuals aged 16+ to help them make positive changes to live their best lives.

I believe in the resourcefulness and resiliency of every child, and that they have the ability to find their own way, if we provide a safe therapeutic container for them to do so. I also believe that the therapeutic relationship is the secure base from which all child-led work is accomplished. I use a family-centered lens, and work to engage parents and caregivers in the therapeutic process.

Do you remember when you were learning how to ride a bike? Undoubtedly, the process of learning was through trial, error, and perhaps guidance from a caregiver. It’s a common conception that a therapist’s role is to simply give advice. That is not the case. My role in our therapeutic relationship is to guide you through the process – just like learning to ride a bike for the first time. It takes effort, time, and perhaps some discomfort…But the “aha” moment of finding balance brings a sense of freedom and independence.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
