Hi, I’m Ashley — Are you feeling stuck? Have you tried traditional talk therapy without seeing the progress you hoped for? You’re not alone — and you’ve come to the right place. I’m a compassionate, open-minded therapist who believes in getting to the root cause of what’s going on beneath the surface. I work with a diverse range of clients and don’t limit myself to a single specialty. That said, I’ve found I connect especially well with individuals who have experienced trauma and are now navigating diagnoses like anxiety, substance use, ADHD, ASD, depression, borderline personality disorder, or intense emotional ups and downs.

I often use a Feminist and Internal Family Systems approach in my practice - which means we get to know different parts of you and what they need.
Hi! I'm Britt (she/they). If you have ADHD, Autism, or a combination of both, your therapy needs are different than neurotypical people. In my view, that’s a wonderful thing! I am neurodivergent too, and supporting people who are feeling stuck is a lifelong special interest of mine. The truth is, sometimes we reach a point where we don’t know what to do, and we need to invite someone else into our headspace to offer perspective and guidance. This is an ancient practice that has evolved over time, and often now looks like going to a therapist. You’re on a time-tested path to making a real change. Welcome. :)

We all feel 'stuck' sometimes. Dealing with traumatic circumstances in our past, struggling with chaos in our current situation, or feeling anxious about what the future holds can leave us feeling frustrated or even hopeless. Like you, I've been through some difficult things, and I know how hard it can be to reach out for help. I offer a safe, accepting space where you can be yourself as we work together to identify what's holding you back.

15 years of counselling! Most people who reach out for therapy are not lacking intelligence, insight, or motivation. In fact, many have spent years reading books, listening to podcasts, talking with friends, or trying to figure things out on their own. My trauma-informed practice is rooted in evidence-based theories and techniques such as Polyvagal Theory, Cognitive Behaviour Theory (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Mindful Self-Compassion.
I recognize that it can be challenging to know where to start when you are feeling stuck or overwhelmed. For many people, the path through a difficult time is confusing and full of mixed emotions. My role is to help you identify the strength that you already hold and support you to create more room for self-compassion, awareness, and ease. I believe that our first priority is to build the trust needed for you to find comfort in sharing your life stories and experiences at your own pace.

I draw on psychodynamic psychotherapy, while incorporating Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, and compassion-based approaches.
I care deeply about giving folks a space to be heard and seen. I believe that the beauty of therapy lies in the growth and transformation that becomes possible when people experience safe, caring presence —both within themselves and with others. I am passionate about working with folks struggling with anxiety, trauma, panic disorder, OCD, and depression. I also find deep meaning in accompanying people grappling with big, existential questions. My ideal client is interested in self-exploration and sees change as a complex and multifacted process that involves many angles and layers.

FAQ - About Family Therapy
What issues does family therapy help with?
Family therapy can help families navigate the complex dynamics of family life, including communication challenges and recurring conflict between family members. A therapist can help family members identify dysfunctional patterns in communication and develop healthier ways of relating. Family therapy may also be helpful during major life transitions or stressful events that affect the family system, such as grief, divorce, trauma, relocation, or a serious illness. In some cases, family therapy can support families coping with specific mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, alcohol or substance use disorders, and eating disorders. In these situations, therapy can provide education and support to family members, as well as to the individual with the mental health diagnosis.

How do I know if my family needs counselling?
Family therapy may be helpful if a family consistently struggles with conflict or communication in a way that affects daily life or relationships. It can also be beneficial when someone in the family is experiencing significant emotional or behavioural changes, such as a family member becoming aggressive, withdrawing, or struggling to cope after a traumatic event. Additionally, some concerns, such as addiction or eating disorders, may be especially important to address in the context of the family unit.

Who attends family counselling sessions?
Family counselling sessions are often attended by members of the immediate family, such as parents, caregivers, children, or siblings. However, other family members may attend when appropriate, including grandparents, stepparents, stepsiblings, or co-parents. Who attends may depend on the family’s needs, the therapist’s recommendations, and the goals of treatment.

Can family therapy be done online?
Family therapy can often be done online. Virtual sessions may be especially convenient when family members live in different locations, have busy schedules, or live in a province, territory, or rural area where family therapists are less accessible. However, online therapy may not be the best fit for every family. In-person care may be more appropriate when there are safety concerns, severe conflict, limited privacy at home, or when young children have difficulty engaging through a screen.

What therapeutic approaches are used in family counselling?
Family therapy can take different forms, including systemic family therapy (exploring how individual actions affect the family), structural family therapy (uncovering the structure and relationship dynamics of the family unit), and attachment-based family therapy (focusing on how bonds between family members shape relationships). Family therapy may also include psychoeducation, which helps family members learn more about a mental health condition and how to respond to it more effectively.

How much does family therapy cost and is it covered by insurance?
Family therapy sessions, which typically last about an hour, often range from $100 to $200 or more, depending on factors such as location, therapist experience, session length, and practice setting. In general, family therapy may cost more than individual therapy because it involves multiple participants and more complex treatment planning. Coverage for family therapy varies by province or territory and by private insurance plan, if applicable. Family therapy provided by a therapist in private practice is often paid out of pocket, although some plans may reimburse services from eligible providers such as psychologists, registered social workers, psychotherapists, or counsellors, particularly when therapy is related to a diagnosed mental health condition affecting someone in the family. Public coverage is generally not an option for family therapy, unless provided through a community clinic or publicly funded agency.
