I enjoy working with individuals experiencing various concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, romantic and peer relationships, life transitions, and gender/sexual identity explorations or challenges. My approach to psychotherapy is trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, feminist, 2SLGBTQ-affirmative, and sex-positive. I take a narrative-based approach to therapy, which is client-centred, using empathy, self-compassion, and humour. I value collaboration and aim to develop a strong therapeutic relationship where we collaboratively create a plan incorporating your specific goals, cultural traditions, experiences, and strengths.

We all have times when we feel overwhelmed by unexpected changes in our family life, relationships, careers or health - times when strong emotions are difficult to manage alone. Perhaps you are experiencing divorce, looking for a career change, deeply saddening by the state of our planet, or wondering what comes next. Maybe you long for a different life, but don't know what to move towards. You might be a high-achieving professional whose drive for success has left you feeling isolated and disconnected. You may be an exhausted or frustrated parent/partner, or grieving the loss of someone you love. You may be male/female/non-binary.

Investing in understanding yourself — what makes you unique, what makes you strong, and how you may hold yourself back — is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. Self-awareness is like a super-power — it doesn’t solve all life’s problems, but it gives you ways of navigating challenges that make you more likely land well. Whether you are looking for quick tools to help shift your mood, or longer-term support for charting a course through a major life transition, or puzzling through challenges with end-of-life, grief, family, relationships or work, I feel privileged to support your success and be and a part of your story.

I offer individual and group therapy to youths (16y/o+) and adults who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of colour). Many of the clients I work with are racialized queer and trans survivors who are experiencing and/or have experienced intimate partner violence, childhood abuse, sexual assault, family abuse, state and workplace violence. Other areas I can support with include impacts of racial trauma, intergenerational trauma, grief, migration, exploration of gender/sexuality, interpersonal relationships and reconnecting with self.

When you dreamed about getting pregnant and having kids, you hoped it would be an easy process. You’d conceive quickly, have a healthy baby, your body would work as you expected, you’d feel in control of the birth process. You expected that parenting would feel intuitive, you would know what to do to meet your child’s needs, the act of parenting would bring you and your partner closer. The reality is that conception, birth and parenting can be full of regret, disappointment, and confusion. Unmet expectations around conception, birth and parenting can leave you feeling disconnected, full of grief and carrying a heavy load.

Within my therapeutic practice, establishing and maintaining a warm and collaborative relationship is of the upmost importance to me. I believe each individual is unique and worthy, and that people typically do the best they can with the resources available to them. Within therapy, you can expect to feel heard, validated, and have a supportive space to express and explore your emotions and tap into your strengths. I want to understand you as a person and to create safe place where you do not feel alone. I encourage both self-compassion and exercising one’s power to take action.

I imagine you have read many of these profiles trying to find the right therapist for yourself or someone you care about. This can be an overwhelming experience, however, the relationship between the client and therapist is vital to the therapeutic process. I believe in each client trusting their own gut feeling when choosing the person they feel connected to and are drawn to work with. This is something I will talk about in the first session as we begin to build rapport and safety. Trusting your gut today is a step towards strengthening the relationship with yourself.

My practice offers counselling to young people, adults and specialized separation/parenting services for families. Challenges experienced by clients may include: navigating family change, stress, anxiety, peer/romantic relationships, self-regulation, and managing behaviours (ADHD, OCD, ODD). As a Collaborative Family Professional, I work with parents wanting to minimize conflict for their family as they go through transition and change. I provide emotional support throughout the out-of-court process, help caregivers build skills to co-parent, and neutrally facilitate meetings during the collaborative process.

I practice trauma-informed somatic & relational psychotherapy. Relational psychotherapy values how the relationships in our life, from birth to death, impact how we understand ourselves, each other, our connections, ruptures and how we engage in daily experiences. Body-centered therapy uses the body to access, resource and heal unresolved trauma. Developing somatic resources, increases our capacity to feel safe in our bodies, gain a deeper knowing of ourselves, feel resourced & to heal. Together we will explore, what's happening in your life, where you struggle, your hopes, and how to move towards healing & thriving.

I am a registered therapist with over ten years experience working in mental health. I work from a client-centered approach integrating evidence-based practice with an emphasis on the therapeutic relationship. I provide clients with a non-judgmental, safe environment that facilitates openness and encourages self-exploration. I am trained in using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); encouraging clients to explore the inter-relatedness between thoughts, behaviours and emotions while helping identify maladaptive patterns.

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
