I use a variety of approaches including Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Positive Psychology, Mindfulness, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotional Focused Therapy, Family Systems Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
I offer a space to help people to feel understood and accepted while working together collaboratively. I understand that although our past can influence our present, it does not dictate the future. I believe treatment plans and interventions are best when they are tailored to match client’s individual needs. Since I believe a strong therapeutic relationship is key, I help clients explore strengths while empowering them to work towards growth and outcomes. I have a passion for working with children, youth, individuals and families and draw from my past 20 years of experience working in mental health.

I use an eclectic approach to therapy but primarily draw from Narrative therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Family Systems Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
My name is Arevik (Air-ah-vick) and I would like to help you find a clear path to the complex journey that you are currently on. Sometimes our lives can become foggy with life transitions, extra responsibilities, social and familial pressures... At times it can simply feel too much. We may start feeling overwhelmed, lost, and unmotivated about our next steps. Working harder does not seem to do the trick and soon, we end up burning out and feeling hopeless. I am here to guide you towards a more manageable path, one that feels more inviting.

I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches and tools, including (but not limited to) CBT, ACT, narrative therapy, hypnosis, trauma-informed therapy, solution-focused therapy, couples therapy, family systems, and brief therapies.
In life, we can find ourselves challenged in ways we did not expect or anticipate. Life can become difficult and overwhelming to manage at times. In such moments, it can be helpful to seek support from someone who might help unearth possibilities and support you in finding healthier and adaptive ways to manage and cope. It is my belief that developing a strong, trusting, and collaborative therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone to therapeutic success. Through mutual respect, genuine empathy, and trust, individuals can be seen and heard, and encouraged to create the changes they want in their lives.

I am a registered psychologist who specializes in narrative therapy, existential/humanistic therapy, emotion-focused therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, positive psychology techniques, conflict resolution and stress management.
I offer decades of relevant experience and expertise to clients who are in the midst of a life changing transition and/or existential dilemma. My approach entails creating a safe, open, engaging relational space and then acting as a catalytic companion by using strategic questions to probe and coax the client to the discoveries and adaptations that will make a difference for them. Once the client's stress states, emotional concerns and confused thinking have been calmed and clarified, my aim is to identify and build upon their signature strengths so that they can fully realize their potentials and capacities.

I have training in, and have applied the following modalities in the past: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, MBCT, Mindfulness, and Meditation.
I started my practice to create a space that is healing, safe, and accepting to help you become more resilient, empowered, and content. Life is often difficult, confusing, and disappointing, but you are much more than your bad days, bad months or bad years. I believe that healing comes from recognizing your true self, living authentically, and balancing acceptance and change. With consistency and commitment, it is possible to break out of patterns that no longer serve a purpose. I offer a judgment-free space where I aim to support you in living the life you want, with peace and conviction. Your goals for yourself are within reach.

Styles of therapy you may encounter are: Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy.
I've been working in the mental health field for over 10 years now and know the importance of finding a counsellor you can connect with. I’m a couples counsellor who also works with individuals in a variety of topics. Many folks come to see me for my experience in the queer / 2slgbtqia+ community; which often has overlap with those who are neurodivergent, as well as exploration outside of a monogamous dynamic (ENM/poly). That said, I work with a variety of individuals in topics - just scroll down to ‘Specialities & Expertise’. My goal is to start by creating a foundation of trust and then customizing techniques to best support you.

My approach is rooted in CBT, ACT, DBT, solution-focused, narrative, and Gottman techniques.
Our journey in life is filled with obstacles, twists, and turns that can feel overwhelming. Some of the barriers we face are the result of outside forces: events in our lives, identities we had no influence over, social structures we cannot dismantle on our own. Others we unwittingly create ourselves. Most of us need some help along the way - a navigator for our journey. I admire the courage it takes to seek this help and I’m confident that I can effectively guide you toward improved mental health and wellbeing. Often, mental health concerns are not so much the result of distorted views of the world; the views are merely incomplete.

Narrative Counsellors

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
