We all have times in our lives when we feel overwhelmed, but most of us are more resilient than we know. And it can be daunting to find the right person to reach out to – a person who “gets” you, or a person with whom you're comfortable speaking.

What is a meaningful life? How do I cope with stress, grief, or trauma? Are healthy relationships possible? How do I stop living in the past? These difficult questions are central to the lives of many people I work with. Challenging life events or a sense of disconnection from yourself and others can have a profound impact on your life. However, you do not need to face these experiences alone. I specialize in working with adults or teenagers who are facing life transitions, change, loss, meaninglessness, relationship issues, low self-esteem, LGBTQ+ concerns, trauma, oppression, and who are feeling lost in their inner life.

We practice from an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) standpoint. We're less interested in labels or in figuring out what’s “broken”, preferring to work with you to find ways to shift processes to help you with your goals. We have experience in providing both brief and longer-term treatment that is evidence-based (i.e., shown to work). We try to help you within your timeframe. We see the psychologist and client both as “real people”, having “real” conversations, about “real life”, to make real changes that are really important to you.

Life is a balancing act, and sometimes we need a little guidance and support to maintain that balance. An experienced therapist can help us move through difficult times, better understand our families/relationships, and find our inner sense of peace, well being and wisdom. Having a neutral, non-judgmental place to share difficulties, receive validation and support can be very beneficial. Collaboration to reach your goal is an essential element of our work together. The client brings open communication, a desire for change and I will listen unconditionally and without judgment. We will work together to help you hear your inner voice.

Do you experience chronic pain? Have you been diagnosed with a chronic illness? Chronic pain / illness can impact so many areas of your life - your ability to work, maintain your home or garden, and participate in activities with your family and friends. Living with chronic pain / illness can be exhausting, overwhelming and so very frustrating. Many people who experience daily pain begin to struggle with stress, anxiety and /or depression, which increases their pain and makes it even harder to cope.

Significant change is happening in our society and life is becoming more complex to navigate. We all need help at times. I commonly provide support for concerns relating to anxiety, depression, trauma, and loss of meaning or direction in life. While I tend to work primarily with men and male-identified clients in my practice, I am open to working with individuals of diverse backgrounds. Clients who are most often drawn to my work are seeking to address complex concerns in ways that also brings deeper meaning and insight to one’s life. I also commonly work with individuals who have a history of childhood trauma or neglect.

The clients I serve in my practice are women, people of colour, indigenous communities and lgbt2sq identified people. You’ve been in therapy before and although you’ve seen results you aren’t yet at the place you want to be. Feelings of stress, anxiety, stuckness and depression are familiar to you. You’ve been going in circles in your relationships and your career and now you’re ready to dig deeper. Your core beliefs keep pulling you back into old patterns like people pleasing, controlling behaviours, co-dependency, and difficulty prioritizing yourself and identifying your needs.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $300 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
