You're a new mom, and when asked by everyone, "are you loving motherhood?" a flood of guilt comes over you because the honest answer is "not really..." Maybe you are expecting a baby and are already experiencing anxiety, depression, or conflict with your partner. The stressors of a new baby and parenting can be incredibly difficult, and in our society it is common to have a difficult birth and an overwhelming postpartum period. It doesn't have to be like that. I am here to help you create birth and postpartum experiences that will leave you feeling triumphant instead of traumatized.

Our early relationships and experiences play a significant role in shaping who we are, and how we perceive the world, which can sometimes result in problematic ways of thinking and dealing with emotions. Consequently, this can lead to emotional turmoil, unfulfillment and dissatisfaction in life, as well as challenges in relationships, work or school, and unhealthy ways of coping. I strive to guide my patients through exploring and processing their experiences so that they can learn better ways to manage, and ultimately feel more present and fulfilled in their lives.

Hi There! My name is Terri De Borger, and I am a Registered Social Worker (MSW). I have over a decade of experience supporting children, youth and their families. This time of year can be challenging as children adjust to new experiences and expectations. For some children transitioning back to school and balancing social activities and extra-curriculars can be over-whelming! I support families through a variety of difficulties including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, relationship issues, as well as other developmental life transitions.

Life’s transitions – they can be the most exciting and the hardest thing for individuals and families to go through. Starting a new job or school year, having a baby, losing a loved one, losing a pet, dealing with the daily pressures of society can all be overwhelming to manage on your own. Has a recent change in your life been causing increased anxiety, stress, fear or depression? Is your mood affecting your self esteem, relationships, or habits? Life is full of transitions yet few of us have truly learned all the tools available to ground ourselves and feel safe and secure as we navigate through them.

Have you experienced child loss or birth trauma and need to process what happened? Maybe you need guidance in a difficult relationship or are experiencing anxiety and rage. It may feel like you aren't in control of anything and life feels lonely. Your family, friends, and partner don't feel these experiences like you do. It's almost like everyone forgot what you went through. This feels extremely invalidating and no one seems to understand. I am passionate about helping women feel empowered and confident as an individual, a parent and a partner.

Sometimes a person has thoughts, feelings, or beliefs that are upsetting or confusing. Maybe they do things that they wish they wouldn’t, or don’t do things they wish they would. This makes life harder than it needs to be. My focus is on how events and relationships affect functioning and happiness. I use a collaborative, client-centred approach, and work from the belief that everyone is doing the best they can. You don’t have to know what’s wrong in order to meet with me.

How can I find a therapist in N0N?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
