She:kon/Hello! My name is Jenny Patterson and I am the founder of Bear in Mind Healing, a private practice based in Cobourg, Ontario. I believe that Mother Earth is a garden and we are the flowers (her children) and that part of my purpose is to help those flowers grow. One of the reasons why I love being a social worker and what drives me to do this work is my own lived experiences. What I find beautiful is being able to walk with folks on their healing journey for just a little while; creating that safe, nurturing space and connection.

I have a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental approach; I use a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Mindfulness to help individuals achieve their goals.
PLEASE NOTE: This practice is not affiliated with my work at the North Simcoe Family Health Team. Many youth/adolescents struggle to find their way in this world, whether because of mental illness, low self-esteem, or simply the everyday challenges and stressors they face. I am proud to say I have helped hundreds of children and youth over the years, as they navigate their way. STRESS, ANXIETY, SELF-HARM, and RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS are common among our youth today, and I look forward to helping them learn positive prevention and coping strategies that will assist them as they move towards adulthood.

With a practical, skills based approach, I will draw on principles of Harm Reduction, abstinence, and Motivational Interviewing in our work together.
A Concurrent Disorder occurs when an individual is experiencing a mental health problem and a substance use problem at the same time. As a therapist working with both of these issues, I can support you with enhancing your motivation for change, identifying triggers, regulating emotions and urges, and with relapse prevention planning.

Motivational Interviewing Counsellors

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathises, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviours in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behaviour.
