Hi! I’m Meghan Schuurman, a social worker providing counselling for children and caregivers through Achieve Balance Counselling. I have 10 years of experience working with children and youth in social service and mental health settings in Ontario and BC. I have worked primarily with neurodivergent children and youth, particularly children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and autistic children and youth. My years of experience in assessment clinics has led to my passion for helping families debrief after their child has been assessed for a neurodevelopmental condition, and support them in accessing local resources.
I offer play-based therapy to children under 12, using a child-centred approach. I love to integrate modalities like sand tray therapy, art therapy, and nature-based therapies. I also offer counselling for parents who need support as they parent neurodivergent children, and specialize in debriefing with parents after neurodevelopmental assessment.
I am passionate about counselling that prioritizes each child or youth’s strengths and honours their unique profile. I strive to work in a neuro-affirming way, that honours the difficulty of navigating a neurotypical world. Being a parent to a neurodivergent child has its joys and challenges, and I can offer a safe place to unpack those experiences.
