Accepting New Online Clients as of 02/18/25. I am focused on helping people with ADHD and Autism, as I have personal experiences with these. I am also able to help individuals, couples and families who are wanting to learn to trust themselves more. I take special interest in managing conflict as I feel that is likely where the most growth will occur. That being said, I recognize that it can be a very uncomfortable experience. Relationships are a high risk, high reward situation. I want to help facilitate difficult conversations as much as possible.

Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional (Buddhist saying). Part of the human experience will involve some form of struggle such as grief/loss, guilt, shame, anxiety, depression, and/or some kind of trauma. We all go through it and cope the best we can but sometimes we could use some help. Perhaps your relationship is in turmoil or an experience from your past continues to interfere with your ability to move forward with your life. Maybe you have recently had a traumatic event in your life and would like help processing what happened. Taking that first step to seek help can be difficult.

I offer online and telephone counselling services in addition to in-person sessions. Much of my career has centred on working with people dealing with crisis and trauma. During the last decade, my focus has included working with children, youth and families. While I have a generalist practice, I have particular interest and specialized experience in working with: families and individuals impacted by loss, addictions, mental health and/or violence, post-war trauma recovery, gender/sexuality issues and sexual abuse recovery.

It can be difficult to succeed in life. But what can be most difficult isn't our life circumstances, work life, relationships, families, or even our bodies, but how we deal with them mentally. Having negative identities, attitudes, beliefs, emotions, desires, urges, addictions, habits, reactions, and thoughts can make things even more difficult for us, to the point that we self-sabotage and fail, destroying our self-esteem, confidence, and lives. I help people build a resilient, success-oriented character and skill set so they can overcome these things and create the greatest possible life for themselves and their families.

My goal is to create a collaborative therapeutic space where you are the expert in your own life. Together, we will explore the stories that shape your experiences, recognizing how struggles can create dominant narratives that overshadow your strengths, values, and preferred ways of being. Therapy is a space to reclaim your voice, rediscover your skills and knowledge, and examine how power, identity, and social and cultural contexts shape life’s challenges. I believe that people are not problems—problems are problems, and together, we can create new possibilities for healing and change

Human environments seem to be getting more challenging, complex and more conflicting for humanity. Everyone tends to be living in fear and doubts. Thus, realization of genuine goals look like a mirage culminating in frustrations, transference of frustrations, and breakdowns. At same time, society tends to be whipping us and make us think something is wrong with us. And we seem to be getting invisible in our world everyday. In the midst of these environmental dilemmas, there is a need to learn how not to be lost completely and with resilience realise our dreams in life.

Life is hard sometimes, and mental health support is something we all need and deserve. I'm here to offer that support to you virtually in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. I work best with adults who are motivated to heal, grow, or change but might not quite know where to start or how to get to where they want to be. I am proud to be 2S.LGBTQIA+, gender-affirming, neurodiversity-affirming, BIPOC-allied, and trauma-informed. I am person-centered, meaning I recognize the importance of your experience and your innate ability to heal, even though life experiences may have made that difficult or confusing to try to do on your own. - Jay Hinton

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
