I've been working with people with various diagnosis, such as ADHD, Autism, Depression and Anxiety for over 7 years.
Are you trying to figure out what your recent diagnosis REALLY means? Or what it is that you could possibly do to get back to feeling like yourself? It can be a challenge at times, but many people are able to reconnect to their sense of joy again, even after a prolonged time of experiencing difficulties. There is a way to get back to connecting with yourself, your needs, and your mental well-being. You CAN learn about yourself, your diagnosis, how you think and feel, and begin to alter it to better suit your needs.

Do you struggle with feeling different? Perhaps you are a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), neurodivergent (Autism, ADHD, etc.), gifted, 2slgbtqia+, intense, a parent of a high needs child, or different in some other way. Your challenges may include dealing with intense feelings, being over-critical of yourself, being easily overwhelmed by life, stress-related physical conditions, feeling alone, or a tendency to put your own needs last in relationships. I offer a safe and accepting space to explore who you really are, and what you need to survive and thrive in a world not designed for you.

Living with chronic illness, disability, or neurodivergence is hard. Getting through the overwhelm of everyday life feels impossible. You're starting to feel like all you think about is your condition and everything it has taken away from you - work, hobbies, sleep, relationships. Your family and friends don’t get it. They try to help and probably mean well, but sometimes the dismissive way they say things makes you feel worse. You try to hide your symptoms to seem “normal” but inside, you feel like you might break.

What I love to see in my clients are individuals willing to put in the work and allow their walls to be lowered so that we can explore their struggles, both in the present, as well as diving into the root cause of those struggles, from the past. It is always ideal when a client is at a point in their journey when they are ready for change, but unfortunately, clients often wait to seek help until they are desperate for change and in serious pain. Wherever you are at in journey, let's talk through it and see if we can help you to rise and move beyond your struggles, and regain your power.

Many children struggle with tantrum behaviour, noncompliance, sleep issues, toileting issues, eating issues, language concerns, aggression , and many other behavioural challenges. Once children are in school, challenges in learning may also appear. Struggling with learning, whether in school or in daily tasks, can be very frustrating for families and children. Often this frustration in children then leads to further behaviour issues such as aggression and/or arguing. Children with a diagnosis such as ADHD, ASD, or a developmental disability can present with many additional challenging issues.

I believe we all have gifts, insights & experiences that inform how we progress and move through life. Sometimes we need someone to accompany us in rediscovering & understanding these parts of ourselves. If you're looking to reconnect with yourself, understand patterns & behaviours, honour & process lived experiences, or re-author your internal narratives, this is the place to create healing. I hope to offer a safe space for you to unfold & integrate the parts of yourself that have been crumpled up.

You wish to be accepted as you are, and have some things you need guidance working through whether that be trauma, anxiety, depression, or difficulty in relationships. Let's talk.

Autism Counsellors

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
