Hey! I am Aleef. I have a deep understanding of intrusive thoughts/Pure-OCD, breakups, depression, OCD, death anxiety not just because I learned about them in some textbook when I went to psychotherapy school but because I have experienced these things in my own life.

Have you or a loved one struggled with OCD for a long time? Has the OCD either worsened or continued to significantly interfere with functioning in daily life? Being tormented by excessive thoughts that go against one’s personal values and attempting to stop, control or neutralize these thoughts with compulsive behaviours or mental rituals is the cycle of OCD. The good news is that breaking this cycle is possible. Common emotions that you are probably feeling are anxiety, distress, frustration, guilt, shame, depression, anger, and hopelessness. Please understand that you are not alone as OCD affects 2% of the entire population.

As a psychotherapist, my job is first of all to listen closely: to learn what the world looks like through your eyes, and how some things are currently not working for you. Being able to "tune in" in this way to each person's unique experience is one of the most important things I can offer, and I have been told throughout my career that I am very good at it. It is the foundation that allows trust to develop between us, so you feel comfortable enough to explore painful or difficult issues together.

I believe that what happens to us is not as important as how we respond to what happens to us. Whatever it is that you are going through it can have meaning for you. Choosing to listen to your suffering and what it is trying to tell you can guide you back to authenticity and a life that is conscious and connected. I do not use techniques. The sessions are spontaneous and client centred. :

I practice within a psychodynamic framework with an emphasis on early life trauma and attachment, internal working models and states as well as somatic awareness and integration. I work with a broad range of clients in terms of social locations, identities and experiences. I understand developmental and complex trauma, structural violence and systemic/social oppression and the ways that they can impact a person's experiences. This work is longer term process work to gain a deeper understanding of self.

Undisturb yourself! Using CBT, Existential, and Mindfulness forms of psychotherapy, I help clients (in-person/ telephone/ on-line) develop the tools in order that they think, act and feel better. Sometimes the realities of life understandably leave us susceptible to certain anxieties, despair and general existential concern. All too often we find ourselves developing unhelpful irrational thoughts and behaviours that can seem impossible to change. But they aren't. If you are interested in investigating and changing your assumptions and behaviours, if you want to modify the lens through which you view and experience the world, my therapeutic modality could be well suited to you.

What does it feel like to be stuck, worried, or uncertain of your life's direction? You've hoped that somewhere inside you there's tremendous potential, but right now you aren't certain how to connect with it. Feeling this way can be especially scary when it impacts your ability to fulfill, or even identify, your heart's desires. Getting in touch with difficult feelings can be transformative, and it often feels more meaningful when you explore them with a trusted therapist. Together, we will softly challenge those feelings and beliefs, while mapping out a clear path towards renewed harmony with the world.

Reality can bite, hard. I believe people can bite back - and learn to be nourished. The trouble is, we develop patterns of relating and being in the world where we remain stuck, no matter how hard we try to adapt. With a lifetime of accumulated armour and coping strategies, some having become sources of stress rather than relief, we can come to feel alienated, alone with difficulties, without a sense of hope for something better. Coming out of conditioned isolation and into meaningful contact with others can be tremendously uncomfortable, and profoundly liberating. Individual psychotherapy is one tool to help with that process.

We're all in this together. We all need someone to talk to, to confide in. We are social beings and connection is a vital element of healthy living. We can talk. Perhaps the big questions in life ("Why am I here?", "What's the point?", "What now?") might be keeping you up at night, or perhaps stress with relationships, work, or family feels overwhelming. The world can be a lot sometimes, it can all feel overwhelming, but you are resilient. Together, we can grow, adapt and learn to navigate all of this. I offer online-therapy and have some spots left!

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
