Were you the helper at home? The easy kid who behaved, acted responsible, was empathetic to others' needs, but at a high personal cost? When we grow up parentified, we learn to derive our selfworth from people pleasing (fawn response), accomodating, and playing the role of peacekeeper. We may have also learned to mistaken loyalty for love and expectations for acceptance. This makes boundaries unfamiliar and uncomfortable, which means that in adulthood we may find ourselves often feeling unreciprocated and resentful, but also battling lots of inner guilt over pretty much everything.
