As a queer first-generation immigrant, I felt lost and alone trying to adjust to a new country while grieving the loss of what was left behind. I hesitated for a long time to reach out for support, thinking I could do it on my own. When I finally accessed therapy, I felt a huge shift which propelled my healing and helped build my self-esteem and sense of self-worth. This transformative experience motivated me to start my own therapy practice.

I follow a client-centered approach that is rooted in a sincere and heartfelt respect for the painful reality of personal and relational struggles, trauma and mental illness; the courage and strength it takes to confront and work with these challenges; and the potential that lies in each of us to transcend these struggles. I hold a nurturing space for my clients in which they feel safe to explore their unique challenges and encounter and nurture their strengths. I do so with empathy, compassion, and gentle encouragement to keep moving toward a more positive experience of self and others.

For close to 30 years I served the HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ+ communities as a counsellor at the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT). I am now in private practice. As a gay man I have a particular interest in working with other gay/Bi/Queer men, but all are welcome. My approach is uncomplicated. I work from a client-centred, trauma-informed, psycho-social perspective, using a goal-oriented approach.

Thank you for considering therapy at The Cope Clinic. The practice is based upon the belief that the emotional and behavioural issues that confound us can become understood through a guided exploration in a supportive and collaberative therapeutic alliance. Having also run a private practice for 15 years, I am now reopening a private practice clinic in the Toronto Beaches area.

Therapy can be a transformative journey, one that holds the potential to foster feelings of radical acceptance and self-compassion, cultivate a sense of inner peace, and provide healing and care to each and every part of you. Developing awareness of yourself and your relationships can often be the first step toward creating change. Together, we'll identify your strengths, explore patterns that may be holding you back and give space to those deeper parts of you that have longed to be seen and understood. We will also work through any events or self-talk that may be creating distress or keeping you stuck.

It can be hard to see our whole selves from within our own stories–like trying to see our own eyes. As a supportive ally, I can help you to explore fresh perspectives when you are feeling overwhelmed or stuck. Reflecting together on the scripts that you have been rehearsing and playing, perhaps for many years, will allow you to reshape the stories that have limited you. Our work together has the potential to transform your sense of who you are, how you relate to yourself and how you relate to others.

Angry, sad, confused or deeply lost, being with someone with years of experience in being with folks can matter. Do you just need someone to really hear you deeply and let you know that you are on the right path, that your soul is guiding you? Through getting to know you with words, deep relaxation, dream work, creative art work and body work we will make sense of this together/dynamically. Sometimes, you will just want clear feedback and I will give that too. Practically, as a Registered Nurse and Psychotherapist I bring a health care perspective and soul exploration.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
