How do you find hope? You are truly strong and resilient, and your kindness shines through as you strive to be there for the people who matter most to you. However, this dedication to others can sometimes lead to neglecting your own needs. Always being the support for everyone else can take a toll on you, and it might seem like there's no one there to support you in return. The weight of the world might feel heavy on your shoulders, leaving you with a sense of being misunderstood, anxious, and overwhelmed.

I have been a psychotherapist for 40 years specializing in a variety of issues including child and adult trauma, sexuality, relationships, anxiety, and depression. My approach is highly empathic, encouraging, and practical. I go between understanding how your difficulties developed by talking about your history and exploring what you may be able to do in the present to feel better. I'm very tuned in and present and usually understand pretty quickly what is going on for you. I offer a lot of compassion and feedback to help you move forward. You are not alone with me.

Does living life feel much more difficult for you than it seems to be for other people? Do you try endlessly to achieve your potential and feel happy, or at least satisfied, but nothing really seems to help? Have you tried everything you can think of but still can't seem to find relaxation or peace of mind?

Do you tend to put others' needs before your own? Struggle to speak up for yourself in your relationships? If so, you may have an overactive “people pleasing” part. You're willing to go above and beyond for others, but self-care feels foreign. You hide your vulnerability to stay strong for others and feel uncomfortable reaching out for help. Deep down, you struggle with self-esteem, and tend to feel inadequate, despite having a lot to be proud of. You just want people to like you, but you feel you have to earn it. You yearn to feel unconditionally accepted and valued, and to feel entitled to self-advocacy and healthy boundaries.

You're not enjoying things like you used to. You don't have the confidence you once had. Simple things like going for a walk or having dinner with a friend seem so difficult. Whether these issues have crept up on you or they have always been present, you are realizing that you would like to do something about it. You don't want to feel down or anxious anymore. You're ready to do the work it takes to feel ok.

Everyone has different reasons for seeking therapy and reaching out for help is an important and courageous first step. I believe in empowering you by acknowledging and working with your strengths. Therapy sessions with me are creative, and integrated, and I weave in elements of mindfulness as influenced by my two decades of experience practicing yoga and mindfulness. I draw from ACT-informed practices, as well as CBT, Attachment-focused, and relational psychotherapy. My experience as a mother of four also informs my worldview, as I believe in being grounded and practical.

I support couples to show up the way you want while honouring who you are. Maybe you're kinky, non-monogamous, asexual, gender-expansive and/or neurodivergent. In our sessions we would explore what it means to have authentic connections professionally, platonically, and/or sexually. I'm a white, disabled, neurodivergent, queer+trans person who has experienced many life transitions and identity shifts. I can hold space for the tension between where we are and where we want to be, the pain of disconnection, and the joy of connecting. A no to one path is always a yes to a new one.

Are you experiencing a lot of burnout? Are you tired and often feeling the effects of tiredness on your body? It feels difficult to have the energy to get through the day. You are so focused on work - you put in long hours, you are getting promoted but you’re wondering whether you even have the energy to show up for all this. For a relationship or all of the other things in life outside of work. You’ve done all of the right things to get ahead but you can feel that something feels missing. Even though you are burned out, you know that stopping work feels difficult. You know you need to prioritize your health and relationships.

It’s been said that showing up for ourselves is the hardest, most important work we’ll ever do. Whether you find yourself grieving a significant loss, processing a difficult life change, or simply wanting to explore a different way of relating to yourself and the people around you, I know that it takes courage to be here. I see therapy as a sort of pilgrimage to our authentic, whole selves, sometimes in the face of darkness and grief. Journeying through what feels difficult in our lives is part of bringing our fullest and best into the world, and I would be honoured to accompany you in this journey.

Each of us comes into this world with unique gifts and an individual perspective. When we are able to use our gifts to handle the stressors and challenges that enter our lives we are able to successfully cope with them. However, when we become overwhelmed by our circumstances to the point where our abilities to cope and enjoy life are affected, that is a sign that consulting a therapist can be useful. Taking that step and calling a therapist takes a lot of courage and it shows that you want to make a positive change in your life.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in Toronto?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postal code, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postal code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
