I feel there is no one right path for self exploration. Some have that space via reading, spirituality, writing or something else. And for some it can take the form of therapy which is not just problem focused but rather person focused. At times, the motivation for self exploration comes from painful life events occurring outside us or other times it could be the overwhelming emotions building up within us. It can also be difficult to distinguish oneself from one’s difficulties and as a therapist I try to join you in your dialogue, confusion & difficulties. Therapy space is unique for it preserves space for the unspoken words too.

I seek to assist clients who find themselves stuck on their journey. This means that you do not necessarily need to have a clear definition of what the problem is, or even what the goal for therapy is, it may mean that you are not happy and don’t know why, that you want to make some changes to your habits or lifestyle, or there is a major life transition happening that you want someone to walk alongside you with. From specific issues such as anxiety or depression, to more broad issues of meaning and existence, I strive to help clients find their version of peace.

You don’t know when things changed, when life became harder, but you know that things aren’t working. Maybe you aren’t sleeping well. Maybe it is exhausting to complete work, assignments, or sometimes even starting your day. Maybe you feel disconnected from your family and friends. You do know that you need things to change but aren’t sure where to start.

Everyone said that motherhood would be the most wonderful time. I feel like something is off, why don't I feel wonderful? Why do I feel sad or scared about this new baby? Why do I feel all alone? How come I'm having a hard time conceiving when everyone makes it look so easy? How come I lost my baby and all of my friends and family around me got to have their babies? All of these experiences can feel so isolating and you are looking for support in coping with the heaviness of it all.

If you're a South Asian young professional (ages 22 to 35) attempting to navigate challenges around self-esteem, anxiety or relationships, I see and hear where you're coming from. Although you may view the world from a primarily western lens, you're probably still navigating life between two worlds. This can often involve trying to meet expectations that you've internalized over many years along with managing feelings of loneliness, shame and resentment. In some cases, you may try to find relief from these difficult emotions by overusing social media, watching hours of entertainment or using food as an escape.

Whatever the concern, my clients are seeking professional support, to feel cared for and understood, to facilitate their ability to cope with their current situation, and desire someone to come alongside them as they determine how to go on. The clients I see are suffering from the weight of mental illness, feeling in the dark places of depression, the restlessness of anxiety, the inescapability of trauma, the helplessness with chronic pain, as well as other debilitating emotional challenges. I also see couples who are facing disruption in their connection, as well as clients adjusting to various changes in their lives.

There are times in our lives when we don’t feel quite like ourselves. Sometimes it’s hard to put our finger on it but friends and family are starting to notice. Other times, we can tell exactly what it is that’s causing problems in our lives. We may be feeling down, have lots of worry thoughts or perhaps we’re unhappy in relationships. All of the overthinking and dealing with the uncertainty of life is leading to sleep problems, low self-esteem and overall emotional exhaustion. You're not alone. We can work together towards finding peace and a way back to feeling good again.

How can I find a therapist in L1G?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
