As a therapist, my journey has been shaped by diverse experiences that included a 26 year career in law enforcement. My time in emergency services provided me with invaluable insights and taught me the importance of empathy, communication, and understanding in complex situations. I meet individuals where they are, offering a non-judgmental space for healing and growth through compassionate support. I strive to empower my clients to overcome obstacles, build resilience, and cultivate meaningful connections. I am also excited to offer Neurofeedback as part of my clinic space using a system called NeurOptimal.

Are thoughts and feelings holding you back? What if you could bring out more fully and consistently who you are at your best? The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approach involves identifying personal values, identifying unworkable actions (including ineffective attempts at control and avoidance), growth in mindful practice, self-compassion, and acceptance, and the implementation of behavioural tools to help you make moves in everyday life toward a life filled with meaning. This is an evidence-based third-wave CBT approach that better respects the complexities of the holistic human experience.

NOW ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. I want to offer my admiration to you for looking for another option in managing all that is going on in your life right now. I suspect that this was not an easy decision, but it is a decision that speaks about your commitment to yourself and possibly those who are important to you. I would like to offer you a confidential and supportive environment, where you can speak about your struggles without fear of the judgements by family, friends or others who you interact with daily. Together, we can explore new ways of coping, or refresh some skills that have been put aside in the past.

I work with children and families. I believe in the importance of good mental health for even the youngest members of our society and I am passionate about seeing families become stronger together. Young people can have big problems too! Anxiety, depression, trauma and grief are all things that impact young and old. I am here to help young people navigate these life challenges; I have studied child development and bring this knowledge into sessions to help kiddos in an age-appropriate way that respects who they are as individuals and how their brains are wired to operate.

Are you an up and coming athlete looking to stay on top of your game? How are you handling the stressors of life, training, performance and school/work. Are you recovering from an injury? Training to get back in the game? Are you a veteran athlete planning the final quarter of your career? Similar to athletes, executives and front line workers are faced with similar challenges of workplace execution, perfectionism and high paced, competitive work lives. I have a track record of success working with people just like you.

Do you struggle with long-term depression, a sense of feeling trapped in low mood or dysthymia which previous therapies have not been able to shift? Maybe you diligently practice cognitive-behaviour or other therapy techniques but are not able to access the life vitality which you know to be possible? Maybe you do all the right things, including exercise, friendships, work, healthy diet, yet still suffer from pesky low-mood swings and bouts of accompanied anxiety? Or maybe you function well on a day-to-day basis but find you are "distant" from experience, like as if there is a glass wall between you and the pleasant moments of life?

Our team, led by Dr. Alan McAllister, Psychologist, provides innovative services to improve your mental health and optimize your functioning. We believe that only by working with the whole person- body and mind- can lasting changes take place. We call our approach "neuroshaping," which is an application of the science of neuroplasticity. We treat depression, anxiety, panic, trauma, insomnia, and addictions. We are especially well-suited to assist neurodivergent individuals (e.g, ADHD, ASD) of all ages.

Effective relationships are central to our well-being. When our relationships are not going well, we can become lonely and isolated, and our mental health suffers. Seeking professional help to look at how we function in our relationships and the impact that they have on us and we on them, can open possibilities for growth. By recognizing the present-day impact of past events, by focusing on our goals for the future, and by changing unhelpful thinking patterns, we can find a path to improved relationships and achieve better mental health.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
