I believe that therapy is like building a warm and safe sanctuary together. A therapeutic space is one where we can comfortably be ourselves and process our past and present lives. Drawing from my South Asian and Muslim background, I bring an integrative and culturally sensitive approach to healing, rooted in trauma-informed practices. My aim is to provide you with a safe and non-judgemental space to share your life story and work collaboratively to discover or rediscover your values and meaning in life. Picture yourself as the driver, steering your life's journey, with me as your passenger.

I work with motivated individuals who are looking to work towards better understanding, dealing with, and changing their lives. Clients of mine often have behaviours, thoughts, feelings, or emotions that are dysfunctional or cause them discomfort, such as feeling anxious, depressed, frustrated, reactive, or scattered. Many of my clients have difficulty with behaviours they feel they have no control over, such as habits or addictions, aversions, or getting easily frustrated or angry. I help my clients understand why these issues occur and help them create tools and protocols such that they can create the changes they want.

Reaching out for help can be hard. I want therapy to be worth your time and energy. I combine Eastern and Western approaches in my work with a particular emphasis on somatic and mindfulness-oriented therapies. My personal journey led me into a 20 year voyage of healing through indigenous shamanic practices, vision quests, meditation retreats, and Western psychotherapies. Maybe you are curious about how to work energetically with grief? Or how to lean into the rhythms of anxiety in ways which are less reactive? Or perhaps you had a traumatic experience years ago and you haven’t felt the same aliveness since? Like a part of you left?

Most of my clients chose me because they need a psychotherapist and marriage and family therapist with a systemic lens who sees their "presenting problem" in the context of their relationships. Whether they deal with personal concerns such as depression and anxiety or have marital and family issues, they come to me to be enabled to have a holistic and systemic understanding of their problems and find practical solutions for their problems. Therefore, I try my best from my side to help, and together, we develop various strategies to solve the problems.

I became a therapist because, just like you, I am human and have had my fair share of battles. It took a long time for me to get to where I am today. I recognize that in moments of hopelessness, it is hard to find determination, that depression can be scary, that anxiety can be overwhelming, and that traumatic experiences can leave one feeling emotionally exhausted and drained out. I acknowledge the stigma associated with mental health and in going to therapy. For this reason, I know how crucial it is to provide therapy that is client-centered, empathetic, and unique to each person’s needs.

Accepting New Clients! Welcome. If you're here, life might be hard right now. It might have been this way for a long time. What you're feeling makes sense. It might be challenging to feel like yourself. Perhaps who you truly are is yet to be discovered. To genuinely feel connected and to understand who we are, we need to understand how our past and present contexts shape the way we respond to difficulties. Sometimes, these protective measures no longer serve us. Perhaps it's time for a change so that we can move forward in healthy ways and toward empowering relationships.

Connection to self and others gives life meaning. It can be difficult to feel connected when we feel depressed, isolated and disconnected or unsatisfied in our relationships. Whether its past complex trauma, a traumatic event, a personal challenge in life or other issue, I would be honoured to be a part of your journey back to you. I also work with couples using the psychobiological approach to couples therapy and assist couples towards secure functioning. In addition, I offer workplaces workshops to employees on mental health and support to managers. Learn more about me at: www.tcapc.ca

Muslim Counsellors

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist will be respectful of faith, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disabilities, or anything that is relevant to an individual’s reasons for seeking therapy. This mental health practitioner will therefore be able to recognize the role of faith in a client’s life, and they can appreciate the cultural values and beliefs of others. Cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist may enhance the possibility of a strong therapeutic bond, even if the clinician does not have an extensive understanding of a client’s background before therapy begins.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Muslim clients?

It is best to ask directly whether a therapist has worked with Muslim clients, and if so, the extent to which cultural or religious principles factored into their work together. You can also ask whether a therapist who is familiar with Islamic practices, values, and beliefs incorporates them into their professional work, and if so, how. If the therapist does not have a sufficient knowledge base, they may well know and can refer you to someone who has such experience.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

It is not necessary for a therapist to share one’s exact religious background for therapy to be successful. A qualified and culturally sensitive therapist will appreciate diversity within the Muslim community as well as diversity overall, and will have a sense of how religious and cultural issues can contribute to mental health. In addition, a good therapist would be willing to learn from their clients.

How do I recognise an effective Muslim therapist?

Like all therapists, a Muslim therapist who is effective will have the requisite training and expertise in evidence-based techniques, as well as the ability to connect with you on a personal level. An effective Muslim therapist may also demonstrate a clear understanding of your cultural background and faith. A therapist with such cultural sensitivity will set the stage for a strong therapeutic alliance.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of the Muslim faith?

The directory of Muslim therapists includes mental health providers who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist with a similar background. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. When the number of therapists identified as Muslim is limited, the directory will also show therapists with extensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
