I am a psychologist in supervised practice specialized in the practices of clinical neuropsychology, clinical psychology, and rehabilitation psychology with adults. Like many Canadians, I come from a bicultural upbringing. For this reason, I am aware of the unique challenges and intergenerational experiences that are faced everyday by those of us who grew up in both mainstream Canadian and multicultural communities. Drawing from my training as a psychologist, as well as my personal journey, my goal is to create an authentic, relatable, and culturally sensitive space for you to share your experiences through the course of therapy.

Guys have way more going on emotionally than most of us are comfortable talking about. If you have never talked to someone about whatever it is that you probably should talk to someone about, then I may be the guy for you. Some men come to my office after they've recently broken up with their girlfriend (or she has broken up with him). Some are dealing with anxiety or are living under the influence of depression. Some guys are trying to figure out who they really are and what to do with their life. What they all have in common is that they have strengths to draw on and want to advance in life feeling better than they do now.

Life is challenging and there is great benefit to a supportive, non-judgmental space to explore concerns and gain self-awareness. Over the ten-plus years I've been practicing, I've helped people improve their relationships -with themselves, significant others, family, friends and careers. I work from a humanistic, client-centered, emotion-focused frame. Together, we will enlist your emotions to direct your course and help you live the life you choose. Many struggles reflect an inability to recognize strengths. I have a deep belief in people's potential and a passion for helping people use their strengths to live authentic lives.

Welcome! You have taken the first step toward change and growth. We all know that Google cannot solve all of our problems, but finding the right therapist can create a sense of control. I have spent my career supporting individuals through various life transitions. Asking for help with your mental health is a sign of strength. It means you are aware that something doesn’t feel right, just like when you visit your medical doctor. You are looking for professional support to help you move through this difficult time. My role is to guide you, working together, to find the tools to cope with and overcome life’s challenges.

It is inevitable that we will face times in life that are challenging. During such times, our community may offer their best support, but it can only be through the lens of their own experiences. This is when working with a therapist becomes an invaluable opportunity for insight, growth, understanding and support. Your background, values and experiences all shape your identity and how you experience the world. I am passionate about understanding your experience and offering compassionate and insightful care.

Hello and Welcome! My name is Salwa and I am a Registered Social Worker at Relationship Counselling Toronto. I am passionate about helping couples manage conflict, enhance their communication skills and deepen their friendship and intimacy with each other in order to feel more emotionally close and connected. I believe that humans are wired to connect with others, and it can be incredibly painful to a couple when they find themselves feeling ‘stuck’ in constant fights, or feeling emotionally distant.

We all struggle in invisible ways as our lives become inhibited by pressures and expectations of the day to day. We are often further debilitated by our less than perfect past, where old hurts and abandon influence our current choices. Most impacted are our relationships, our work, and our connection to the self. I believe therapy gives us the opportunity to both accept what was and is, and through growth orienting processes help us recreate ourselves into versions that feel more aligned with who we would like to become.

Feeling like you don’t have the permission to be yourself? Following a narrative that is not your own can lead to anxiety, depression, and confusion. Perhaps you wish you could be more present in your everyday activities and relationships, but aren’t quite sure how to get there. You may even find yourself in situations where you ask yourself, “Who am I?” or “Why am I here?”. Struggling to feel whole while constantly managing the pull between different identities can be exhausting. Your sense of self feels fragmented, but know that being able to live according to your own values and leading a more meaningful life is within reach.

Everyone is unique and presents their own challenges. Through education, experience, authenticity, and a touch of humour, I employ a number of different modalities to counsel individuals and families. Though I lean on an integrated narrative-existential approach through a person centred focus, I also use solutions-focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, as well as acceptance and commitment therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy. I can provide short term therapy, but I am also in for the long haul with you.

Welcome! Every one of us has grown and been shaped by the relationships we have had and continue to have throughout our lives. Along this path, there may have been pain, anxiety, grief, loss, and joy. Perhaps you are searching for support with depression or loss, or anxiety, or the sense that something isn’t as you wish it to be in your life and relationships. You are seeking a path out of your distress. In therapy, building the space for acceptance and curiosity, for compassion and repair, is what heals.

I have observed that the patients I care for struggle with the very things that make us human, namely difficult thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and the inner conflict and distress these create. Ultimately we want to feel free to be ourselves, fulfilled in our relationships, capable to meet life's challenges, satisfied with meaningful and purposeful lives. The path forward for many people includes a deep acceptance, not necessarily agreement, of the barriers interfering with life satisfaction, disempowering them and then generating space for creatively responding to them. Welcoming to all communities, nationalities and traditions.

Have you experienced trauma and now you struggle with anxiety, depression, dysregulation, addiction, grief or ADHD? Is it showing up in your day-to-day life, relationships or your work? Do you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, frustrated or burnt out by just making it through the day? Do you question if it’s possible to resolve trauma and wonder if therapy will actually help? Now more than ever, individuals are feeling uncertain about how to cope in healthier, more helpful ways, and how to actually process their trauma(s). I believe it shouldn’t be so hard to feel safe, secure, and stable, and reach your full potential.

In therapy, we deepen our understanding of how lived experiences and interpersonal relationships inform who we are. When this understanding is awakened, we can increase our self-acceptance and self-empathy. Therapeutic change isn't about changing who you are. It's about forgiving yourself, accepting yourself, and caring about yourself, so you can transform your relationship with your inner self and the world around you.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in Toronto?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postal code, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postal code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
